Does anyone know what the single wire (about # 16 gauge) that comes out of a group harness near the battery is for? On my '75 Beetle, it powers the factory electric fuel pump. Since I don't have that on my '74 Thing, I don't know what this wire is connected to. It looks like it would go to the positive battery connector. It has a "push-on" lug. Any ideas?? Question

Thanks for info. I bet it is part of the diagnostic system. It has no effect connected or unconnected. I don't have backup lights so I thought that's what is was. That's another issues to troubleshoot.

Did you check the fuse in the wire near the top of the fan shroud? That might be your backup light problem...

Yes, that is the first place I went. I'm going to check the switch at the trans next. Wiring and connectors looks ok.

The wire appears to be yellow with possibly a red tracer. It has a push-on lug.
