My 1971 squareback. Got a pretty good deal on it, very straight body, barely any rust on the pans or body(typical battery tray rust). Been totally rewired using a GM fusebox, lowered quite a bit in the front(no idea how much though) and slightly lowered in the rear. I'm pretty content with it right now, the first "big" thing I want to do is find a pancake engine for it or convert the current engine to a pancake from an upright Beetle engine(is this possible). Right now trying to figure out how to fix the seats, the previous owner has the backs switched on them and they won't fold foward.
Anyways, tell me what you think and I'll try to get more active around here and keep you guys updated on its progress. _________________ Progress updated 5-2

Yes it's possible to convert the one you have. If it's a Universal case and already has the oil fill tapped in it, that will make it much easier. If not you'll have to tear apart the block and get it machined. You would also need the fan shroud, tin and oil filler tube. Good luck and have fun with it.

ha! yeah when I first saw all the gauges and toggle switches I was pretty confused until the previous owner told me most of them didn't work . Out of the 5 gauges, only two work, the volt meter and amp meter. out of the 9 ( ) total toggle switches four work and they are quite rigged. one turns on the tail lights, one turn on the right headlight, one turns on the left headlight and one turns on the "custom" glove box light. the headlight thing is kinda fun to play with sometimes but I'll probably fix it so its all on one switch. I plan on getting rid of that whole mess once I find a place to hide all the wires behind it, or figure out which wires I can get rid of.
As for color I'm definitely going to do something dark, right now I'm kinda liking the primer gray, but something else has to be laid down. I'm thinking along the lines of gunmetal gray or john deere blitz black. I'll worry about it more when I get the cash to take care of it.
Thanks for all the kind help and input, i'll be checking around on parts for my motor transformation today. _________________ Progress updated 5-2

| Separate headlights. LOL thats funny. Sounds like you may need a wiring harness to get that back to proper. |

I like it dude. My auto shop teacher always told us the amp meter guages were bad news. He said they catch fire all the time, don't ever use them. Voltmeters are much better. That was in the early 80s too. _________________ Wanted: Original Roanoke Valley Motors Inc license plate frame or anything from that dealership. |

Looks like the previous owner was trying to build a poor man's Knight Rider. Waaaaaaayyyyyyy too much of a rat's nest in there. Keep us posted on the progress. Definitely look for a replacement wire harness. _________________ -

yeah the entire car has been rewired using a GM fusebox. and ALL of the wires are blue . Can't wait to encounter my first electrical problem . I'll probably work on getting it rewired back to VW specs toward the middle or end of next year, just depends on how long it takes me to do my engine swap or conversion and get the thing painted the way I want to. _________________ Progress updated 5-2

You could really eff with people behind you by switching that tail-light switch and make them think you are hitting the brakes..lol _________________ Bill

I've done it to my dad a couple times. I normally keep all lights on for "safety"(i really just forget to turn them off and luckily they go off when the key goes off). I probably play with the headlights a lot more though, its just something you dont see too often i suppose. _________________ Progress updated 5-2
