Today I was finally able to knock the well rusted hinge pins out of my right front door hinges.
Since I don't usually think that far ahead I now had a door that was ready to go back on the body but had no hinge pins for it to rest upon. I wasn't too thrilled about ordering them from the Thing Shop and having to wait for them to arrive. Since I couldn't find a 6mm metal dowel anywhere locally, I purchased two 5"stainless steel 6mm bolts with the threads only halfway up the shaft. I cut the head and the threads off, filed the edges and voila' a 1 1/4" hinge pin.
You've all probably thought of this already but I thought I would throw it out there just in case. |

Great idea.. Never heard of anyone doing that before. I have a giant supply Thing hinges with pins available but I like your solution. Getting the hinge pin out of the hinge is possible. Getting a sheared section out of the door is another issue. |

I have a source for brand new drill bits cheap. I was thinking I could just use them as a source of hinge pins if needed. I did not think of stainless bolts. Great idea! |

Drill bits another cool idea... Hey are you able to share your source of cheap new bits? |

Thanks for the kind words. It's nice to have a right hand door again. I was getting sick of looking like a chauffer with the kids having to ride in the back.
By the way, the cost for the bolts were .37 each. |

We have a place called CalAero near us that sells surplus hardware. I can buy a thick handfull of 10" drill bits for less than a buck. It's over near the 105 and the 710 freeway. Paramont blvd just south of the 105. |
