Grrr.
I've replaced the fuel tank, fuel lines, rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel pump.
So check, I've thrown parts at it.
The Thing will not start. If I put fuel in the carb, it'll run, but it's not getting fuel pumped to the carb.
Any ideas? I'm about ready to moltov coctail the beasty and be down with it. |

Some ideas:
-did you hook the electical wire to the fuel shutoff solenoid on the carb? No electricity to the solenoid = no gas from the bowl to carb intake
-hook up the fuel lines properly?: from tank on top, to carbs on bottom
-just went through this firedrill on MY engine: correct fuel pump/fuel pushrod combination? If the black plunger on the pump's underside is recessed about 11mm, you need a 111mm long pushrod. If the black plunger is flush with the pump's underside, you need a 100mm pushrod.
-made sure no fuel line blockage?: pull the line going into the pump and gas should flow with gravity as its only aid.
-check the carb bowl to see if it is filling with gas?: pull the drain plug slowly out to see if it is filled with gas.
Test and post here for more diagnostic help.

I'm of the same mindset as Mark on this.
Check your fuel lines to and from your fuel pump.
Make sure the line from the tank goes to the intake side of the fuel pump and the output side goes to the carb.
It seems obvious, but in reality it may not be.
I bought a Brazilian pump a while back that looked the same as the Mexican/German pump but the intake and output ports were reversed....for whatever reason.
I was really stumped until I figured out what was going on.
Like.....duh.... |

Now running.
The plunger for the fuel pump was... upside down.
I'll forever be amazed I made it home from Ohio in this Thing. It's solid, a survivor, but man, it's still amazing.
The fuel lines all fell apart in my hands when I went to replace them. The carb is still knackered up, but it's slowly coming to an idle.
I'm going to save my money for twin Webers. |

My new engine has dual IDFs - I like them so far. It will be interesting to see how well they start in the winter (no choke or heat risers).

Mark,
Are you saying you have no shroud flaps and thermostat???
If so, I bet you're gonna have some warm up issues in northern VA in the wintertime.....not to mention not having a choke.

My carb has been rebuilt. There's still a air leak, somewhere, that won't allow for idle adjustment.
So... I'm starting by shoring up the air intake manifolds, slowly but surely.
Given that it's an origional car, has only 53,000 miles on it, and it's "all there", I'm going to try to keep it stock for now. |

If you suspect an intake leak, try replacing the carb base gasket, the manifold sleeves, and the manifold to head gaskets.
The later won't be a picnic with the mill in the car...but it can be done.
Also, replace all your vacuum lines.
You said the carb had been rebuilt. Did that include new throttle shaft bushings? |

I read somewhere about spraying something (carb cleaner? WD40?) on areas suspected of leaking air to troubleshoot the intake system. If it sucks the stuff in, the engine bobbles or wobbles or something... Maybe someone more experienced could add to this....

Carb cleaner works well, if the engine idle rasies you found the leak, i have used water in a spary bottle also works, it will lower the idle and less likely catch on fire if the motor get really hot. |
