Christmas- a time for giving, a time for receiving... and a time for driving the rest of the family up the wall because nobody ever knows what to give you.

My family says i am difficult to shop for- I never "need" anything, and every year i ask everyone to make a donation to their favourite charity in my name, but the kids always complain that i "need' to have something under the tree to open.
This year, my kids have decided to get me a DVD or two of movies/tv shows that have Things in them.

So, to make a short story long...
I got to thinking, how many movies or tv shows have Things in them?
I know there is a list somewhere on the web, but i thought it might be fun to stretch our own pop-trivia knowledge and create our own list.

The Fog - John Carpenter always loved the movie "The Thing" and before he remade it, he would put references to it in other movies. Like in "Halloween", Jamie Lee Curtis is watching "The Thing" on TV. In "The Fog", Addrienne Barbeau drives a VW Thing.

Runaway Bride - '73 on a lift with Richard Gere sitting in it. The Thing has widened rear fenders, front hood luggage rack, missing driver's side mirror.

Max Dugan Returns - I've seen bits of it and recall a Thing in it.

Smokey and the Bandit - Towards the end, a group of people at a food drive-in agree to run block for Bandit. I always thought there was a VERY brief interior shot of a Thing, but can't be certain.

Gone With the Wind - there is no Volkswagen Thing in this movie.

Star Wars - Episode VI - No Thing here either, but I think the landspeeder is modelled after a Thing. It goes off road, is a convertible, has side ribbing, and looks VERY cool!

LOL- speaking of land speeders, Dark Mask's transport of choice in "Spaceballs" is a hovering Thing.

Mixed emotions choice- "Speed 2" has a long prominent sequence at the beginning with Sandra Bullock taking her driving test in a yellow Thing. Mmmm, Sandra Bullock in a Thing is basic fantasy fulfilment material, but...
a) she wrecks the Thing, and
b) It happens in "Speed 2," possibly the worst movie of the last decade.

The movie Extreme Days has a VW Thing

Horrible movie, but the Thing is the car 4 friends take on a road trip.

They call it a joyota I think, because they dropped a Toyota engine into it,

Jeep+Toyota = Joyota

But its a THing!!!! Thingyota!

the OG movie The Swap Thing, and old b rated movie made in the late 70's. One of my buddys has the car in his scrap yard. The entire bottom has a thick piece of metal welded to it. In the movie the car has blown up and a large ram was placed under it to launch it into the air. I scraped the spedo out of it for my 74 thing.

Here's some lesser-known movies that feature Things on top of what's already been mentioned:

I don't know the name of it, but my girlfriend was watching this movie with Reese Witherspoon- alot of scenes w/ her and some chump took place in a purple Thing. Personally, I'll always watch a John Witherspoon movie over a Reese Witherspoon one, but this one had a Thing in it.

There was a movie that was always on TV when I was a kid called "The Great American Traffic Jam" that prominently featured an orange '73. Nobody shows that movie anymore, but it's worth looking into.

There was also a movie I was forced to watch in Religion class in high school called "Romero," with Raul Julia as a Thing-driving preist. He drives an olive Thing throughout the movie until it gets shot up with AK's

Oh, and one video not mentioned is Melissa Etheridge's version of "So This is Christmas," which has a Thing throughout. Pretty obscure- I only know remember it because I used to know the guy whose Thing was in the video. The director saw the Thing and asked the guy if he could use it in a video shoot. He ended up featuring the Thing, and put the guy's dog in the video, too.

Lee Marvin in The Dirty Dozen shows bunches of Kubelwagens. There was a picture of Jim Brown throwing grenades down air ducts and a Kubel is shown in the background. This pictures was feature in an article about Things in Road and Track in 1973.

More movie trivia

Some things to look for:

1. On Drew Barrymore's THING in 50 first dates, the side view mirrors are not stock- weird black replacements. They look like they're from a small Chevy pickup. Stop frame it to see these

2. Runaway Bride: Richard Gere in the yellow THING on the hoist. They removed the drivers side mirror so it wouldn't obstruct the shot of his face. It's a 73. Should have left the mirror on. :-0

3. Tapeheads: The THINGs windshield wiper is holding 11 traffic tickets as they booze their way around town.

4. Most painful scene- Speed Two's 73' slamming its side into the side of a police car. Watch it in slow motion and cry. Sandra Bullock is NOT a convincing THING driver.

It takes a still frame nut like me to see all of this stuff. But then again, that's why my screen name is "all things are beautiful" dot com
