Back in 1997, only two companies were casting BRM wheels. Midland Wheel Supply (MWS) out of the UK and Flat-4 out of Japan. _________________ 1947 Type 11a

If you must go replica.. I like MSW, they are machine cut, so you don't have two worry about polishing them so often.

does this mean that if my car is the stock height, the front tires will bluge out of the fenders? btw, i will be running 145's and the 5 " wide brm rims all around. |

I would stay as far away from the flat 4's as I could get. The "real" mag wheels are prone to cracks and flaws so you need to be very careful and should probably have them X rayed. Mag Masters can check them out for you. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

the newer flat4's or the older ones? in previous threads, i read that it was only on the newer cast flat4's and the wider ones are prone to problems. |

I really don't know when the problems began......but I have seen two sets of Flat 4's break on the dyno under load. VW Trends put on Dyno days at a local speed shop and I watched as two different sets fell apart that day. That was good enough for me.............................Any set would make me concerned after that. Why would you subject a brittle 40+ year old wheel to any kind of turture? _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

ouch! i read that on the other thread. i personally dont think that i would put the rims thru that much power though. it will be used on a stock beetle with a 1600 sp rim. thanks for the info. this would be something to think about when i decide to add a more powerful engine. |

My point exactly. Andy Spilkoman about blew his hand off just pressuring one up. Old and real does not mean better in this case. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Yeah you have to be careful when buying the real BRM's. The last set I sold I had tested for crack's. I just had that discussion a few week's back with Rick Zavala If you guy's are going to pony up the cash for the real deal BRM's and they have a few pit's or been repaired once. Make sure to get them tested for crack's first or you just might be sorry I've been lucky so far All my BRM's are SHHHHHWEEEEET ! _________________ EMPI KICK'S ASS EMPI KICK'S ASS

That's interesting - I've got a set of Flat 4 BRM's and I thought they were supposed to be higher quality than the MWS ones? More accurate, lighter, better made, etc? They're a hell of a lot more expensive - at least double over here. I chose them to run on my 2276cc split bug.
I want to get my wheels re-polished so that they look more like originals - there are at least 3 sets of originals in our club so at least the fakes have got to look the part!
(As a side note, I'd never buy anything from MWS after seeing them *allegedly* rip off another wheel company more than once...) _________________ '51 Split Beetle Cal Look project - sold!
