ok i had a fire in my thing not a bad one. I redid all the wiring in the car rebuilt the carb and replaced the generator and regulator but the dam thingstill dosnt charge can some one please help me out me and my vw mechanic are both stumped on this. i pretty sure i have it all wired up right but the damn little red light is still on _________________ 1973 vw thing 1600cc engine ONce agian is a live

Did you "polorize" the generator? After replacing it or the voltage regulator, you must polorize it.
1) Leave a jumper wire connected from DF to ground.
2) Remove the fan belt.
3) Connect a wire from the battery + terminal to D+ on the generator.
The generator shaft should start to spin.
Don't run this way for more than a few seconds to avoid overheating.
The generator will now be properly polarized.
If the generator did not spin during this motoring test, the generator is likely defective.
Remove the jumper wire from DF to ground, re-install the fan belt. Start the engine, the light should now be out, and you're charging again. |

Appearantly he's not that familiar with vintage VWs - polarizing the generator is required for all new installs and the paperwork that comes with most regulators will note that.
Do you really like this mechanic? You might want to consider someone else in the future. |

no he is more like a freind but taht is all we do is vws i help with stuff i know like computers and he helps me with vws _________________ 1973 vw thing 1600cc engine ONce agian is a live
