Does anyone know anything about a VW of America recall back in 1972 on windshield wipers for over 30 million 1949-1969 models? Seems a lot of people I know have had windshield wiper problems.

Geez, I thought that was normal too! The wiper arms on my 67 bug work loose all the time. It is strange entertainment watching them go out of sync and bang into each other in the rain. I never got a recall card though.

Does anyone know how we can find out about the recall? We all might benefit from this.

Go to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site/nhtsa/menuitem.ee6733b87096a398d33a431046108a0c/

Click on Find Out If Your Vehicle or Equipment Has Been Recalled in the middle.

Type in this recall number: 72V256000

VW has been out of the NHTSA wiper arms for over 20 years.

You can spot them by how they mount: The originals were held on with a screw that you got to by pulling the arm away from the glass. The NHTSA arm is held on by a bolt going thru the side of it. It clamps tight around the shaft. They look like this:

By law, recalls never expire but VW just laughs at you when you ask them to honor the recall. "Sorry, no parts are available." Like this is my fault??

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Benefit? in what way?. The "recall" was decades ago. Think . Maybe file a claim with VWOA, and when all is said and done, if they honored any claim, you'd save $5 over fixing the issue yourself after all the hoops to jump. Some things are better self-rectified than persuing some "brockavitch" class action claim for (less than) peanuts.Fix it if it's broken.

P.S. there are links earlier in the thread about the fossil recall.

I know,old thread...
Any inherant collectability due to the fact that these were recalled and potentially destroyed? Curious...

These wipers were not recalled, they are the fix for the recall. NHTSA determined that the stock VW wiper arms were inadequate so I guess VW came up with these arms to address the government's concerns. I would think that they would be collectible due to the fact that they attach more securely than the stock ones. Why, do you have some?

Oh,I had it the other way round. Ya,they came on my '64 Singlecab and I would rather have the commercial black arms.

I was able to look up the original NHTSA report on the wipers
issued back on October 12, 1972 Go to / click on

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm

type in 72V256000 in the search window

It will bring up the paper on the wipers.

If your willing to fill out a form they will mail you the whole package
they have of documents on their investigation.
After all this time however its doubtfull VW of A will come up with new wiper arms. Very Happy
