Hey thing owners, I thought you might get a kick out of this. I found this top 10 list this morning on www.cars.com

1974 Volkswagen Thing
Scary for: Onlookers

Just take a gander at this. No wonder they named it the Thing; it was styled by the same guy who invented the cookie sheet. Thankfully, they rusted quickly enough that few remain to invoke PTSD for former owners.

I've never owned one, but I've always thought that their goofy looks is what gives them so much character. BTW, the bus also made the top 10.

Great. The bus I've owned and the Thing I want on one list. I knew I was a rebel! Rolling Eyes

It doesn't surprise me that a car that looks like a bunch of aluminum shingles welded together would be on a list of scary cars.

Those two Car Talk clowns have always had it in for all air cooled VW's, and never turn away an opportunity to damage their legacy. In their description of the Pontiac Aztek, they say "now we know where the designers of the Volkswagen Thing went to work after VW canned their sorry butts." Obviously, it's an attempt at humor, but I believe that the VW181 styling is well-proportioned and well executed. Comparing it to the Aztek is ridiculous. American drivers just aren't used to the Thing, but if you never had seen a Wrangler before, you'd think it was weird looking too. The same goes for any car with distinctive styling.

The Aztek's styling is an example of multiple compromises rendering a decent looking prototype into a bastardized production model. The Thing didn't suffer from this.

Look at their other picks - The Hummer is on the list, just for being too big. The Festiva is on the list, just for being too small. If these jokers had their way, we'd all be driving identical '99 Ford Tauruses!

The Thing is scary to onlookers? The only onlookers who should be scared if they see my VW coming is Tom and Ray!
