I may go look t this this weekend. Anu ideas on the value? It would be a new toy for me, but I may sell if I get tired of it.

1974 VOLKSWAGEN, SAFARI, thing, new black top, mileage shows 62,158

Owner syas he bought it @4 years ago, had it repainted from Pink to hunter green and had all new brake componets installed. CLaims little to no rust.

"He claims little to no rust."

Take a good magnet and look close. The pics made it look like there was alot of "repairs" in the lower body.

There are a few issues with it.
1. For one it is a 73 not a 74.
2. The blitz gas can is blocking the "fresh air ports".
3. As stated above, looks like the lower part of the pan/lip been modified (welded?)
4. Lower part of the doors look kinda wrinkled (welded?/Bondo) maybe just the picture?
5. Front bumper looks tiltled downwards.
6. Windshiled looks as though it is starting to tilt towards the back. In fact the curtins seem to extend beyond the windshield.

Depends on the rust/repair quality to determine what it is worth. Milage is by no means a indicator for condition.

If it is drivable and doesn't have large holes , and is as I stated above, about .8k-1k is all I would pay for it.

I'm with the others on this. The paint looks shiny, but the body doesn't look right.

The left front fender looks bent - note how close it is to the front of the tire. Notice the front bumper isn't level, in fact it's sagging pretty badly - mine was like that because the bottom of the trunk had rotted out. The front clip is buckled a bit too. The driver's door is ... crinkled? - very odd. There's flat paint on the driver side rocker and bottom of the door post - this is a common rust spot. The front windows don't fit properly behind the windshield because it's sagging - this could be mis-adjusted or it could be another sign of hidden rust (expensive rust at that!). Check the frame for bulges and wiggle it a bit - it should be pretty solid.

Finally, it looks like a '73, not a '74. If it's got a gas heater in the boot (or holes for one) then it's a '73. If it doesn't, then someone did something to the rear muffs and relocated the mirrors.

WOW

I guess a picture does tell a lot. I amy swing by and look at it. The owner is 75 years old, so maybe he thought it was a '74.

Thanks all,

It could still be a 74.My thing was made in Nov. of 73 and it looks like a 73, but the title says 74.

The true test is to look at the VIN number. The third numbe gives the year model a VIN number that starts 183 is a 73 thing a VIN number that starts 184 is a 74

So, what makes it a 74, the title, the year it was made or the style (changes). I think the style is what is widely accepted as the year. But it is reality it is the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) that decides the year. Which describes the vehicle via it's VIN.

First ones ('73)
Gas heater
Door mounted mirrors
No air boxes on side

Last ones ('74)
No gas heaters
Hing mounted mirrors
Air boxes

There are many more than 73 and 74. I think they go back to 68 and as late as 78. Early things are German made and usually military. After the 181 is the 183 water cooled things.

A big difference on the body would be the mirror mounts and the ear muffs.

Not imported to the US by VW, there isn't.

Doesn't matter what VWoA imported. Cars ship from one country to another all the time, and many ex-military 181s have ended up here.

And your point being?

I'm trying to help the guy with what is more than likely a US thing.

I like arguing. Razz

Plus, since the seller is already out-right lying about it, who knows what it really is? Maybe even he doesn't know if it was a U.S. market 181...

(BTW, Ray, a "1974 Thing" could have been made at any point between August 1973 and July 1974...)

I just don't like that 'ledge' below the last rib.

Do check if it has the AMxxxxxxx on the engine, and the skid plate on it (the engine). Check the tranny for 'pop out' of gear problem.

And the wipers (motor).

Also if you can pop off the top a bit and flop the windshield down (look for mega rust on bottom of WS frame!)

When I had my first windshield frame, it looked rust-free, but was rotted out. It hinted at it by bulging sagging and not being very solid. You could see it when trying to slide out the seal at the bottom of the frame.

I paid $1000 for it when I first got it. I've sunk in at least $20k more over the last 10 years, but I bought it knowing it would be work to make it nice. It was; it is.

I had stated that my thing was made in Nov. 73 and the title says 74. I guess I was trying to point out that the owner of this thing may be saying that it is a 1974 simply because thats what it says on his title also.

A question would be, on what date did the gas heater end and the soft heat begin?
