hello,
i've begun my baja project and making good progress. i bought a chenowth class 11 roll cage and its being a pain to install. the instructions are pretty vague.
i was wondering if anyone who has this type of roll cage could take some pictures of how it goes together. a couple things in particular: how the rear part of the cage attaches to body/smash tubes to engine mount. and what part of the shock tower/torsion tube do i attach the brace to the main hoop just behind the front seats.
i serched the gallery and theres not too many interior shots of baja bugs. could someone please post some pics to help me out?!
thanks, Joe

yup, thats the helpful picture that takes up half of the instructions. i would like to see an interior picture of a finished cage to see how it aligns with the body before i go cutting the tubing to short.

i too have one of these kits, can we hear from someone who has done one of these kits themselves? i dont think i have seen onyone come up in here saying they have done this installation on thier car. if you took it to a shop can you give us the contact info?

again, we need to hear from people with first hand experience with this kit.

I had one I tried to put in my 64. I got the center hoop in and tried to get the rear hoop, but the tubes are Notched all FUBAR. I gave up. When I get my next Baja, Im just gonna bend my own cage. The Chenowth cage is ok If youve got the time to try and fit everything correctly, but I saw some weak spots in the design while I was trying to install it.

Sorry I cant be of much help
Andy

The book by Jeff Hibbard - "Baja Bugs & Buggies" may be some help. He goes into some detail about roll cages.

ok here is what i have found out about my rool cage so far

1: i do not have the Chenowth brand roll cage, i dont know who made it and i am not going to post who sold it to me. i can tell you that nothing will line up right out of the box.
2: none of the joints are going to line up right and you will have to grind and adjust as you go, this can be good if you have a different vision in mind for your cage, bad if you want something righ out of the box that will fit right up(i can tell you that all the fish mouthes suck! these guys need to review just what size O.D. tubing they are useing!!!) if you cant handle adjusting and working with it and spending the time necessary to get a good fit then just plain DONT BUY THIS KIT. it is a pain in the ass and takes a good bit of time for the average joe to make it work.
3: this is a good BASE for a nice cage. the kit includes all the major beams and with it you can make the frame for any type of cage you want, simple recreational cage to hard core bad ass cage. again, this is a great frame to start with and work up to as hard core as you want. right out of the box will provide great protection for recreational off road, or you can build off of it for as bad as you want.
4: if you are going hard core you will need to think of just what you want the cage to do (rear shock mounts, connecting to the rear torsion housing, runing beams to the frame horns, how you are going to tube the front end..ect)and use what the kit has to get you close then you need to work from there.

this is a great kit for a beginner that wants to have a semi-bad ass car and has a good idea of what he wants to do.

if you are the kind of person that wants to pull something out of the box and expect it to go right in, stay away from this kit!

in conclusion, this is a decent kit.....it will require a lot of work but it can be as bad as you want to make it.
i just wish the fish mouthes were better!!! Evil or Very Mad

I started searching and found this older thread. If there is a newer thread let me know please.

I too have installed a chenowth cage. Everything is complete except mounting to the rear torsion/shock mount portion. I have managed to keep the body/cage removable even on the set mount portion, and would like to do the same with the torsion mount. This thread started out with the same question I have:

How have you all been attaching the cage to the rear torsion area? Pictures say the most if you have them.

Thanks as usual, the knowledge here is fantastic!!

Nice!

Mine's not tied into the torsion tubes, but until I get coilovers in the rear and start jumping, I don't think it's a big deal.

Hi. We start with a Class 11 cage and add to it. We started making cage kits out of cromolly for Class 11 or 5-1600. These are some of our kits that we make. Thanks Dennis
