Hi,

I have been doing a few thing to get my new addition back on the road again after it has been sitting in the previous owners garage for over 19yrs.

I removed the steering wheel the other day, now while I always try and keep the parts I remove in one area. Some where, some how I misplaced the nut to put the steering wheel back on......Anyone now the correct size nut for this?????

On a different note. This will be my sixth VW Thing, and while I have enjoyed all of them this is the first that I have had to bring back to life after sitting un touched for such a long period of time, over 19yrs. One other Thing had been sitting for about 3yrs and getting that running was really just a matter of flushing the fuel tank, changing the fuel lines/filter, plugs and shooting some starter fluid in the carb.

Now this Thing I'm working on now, I wonder if you Thingers out there would like to chime in and give a little list of stuff you would do, having bought a Thing sitting for as long as this one has.

The previous owner said that after his son broke the clutch cable learning how to drive a stick, he parked it and there it sat for over 19yrs until I got it. The engine turns by hand...that's good, aside from that I’m going down a little "2-do" list that I have made up for this Thing. The engine is 100% original, as is the Thing.

Thanks for all the feedback

It is not a bolt, it is a nut. It is M18 x 1.5, with a 27mm hex.

Pardon my error, it's been a long week. I may have been typing that post half asleep.

Bruce, Thanks for the correction and the size......

My '74 had been sitting under a shed in south Georgia for 12 years. First three items were tires all new brake components and fuel system to the fuel pump including tank. The rest will be as needed. It looks like a lot will be needed though nearly rustless and no "hits".
