Didn't find anything in a search... Working on a '57 Single Cab, putting a tunnel trans inplace of the split, what front mount choices do I have? Is there a rubber unit? or Is the solid adapter mount my only option?

Need some Big Nut brake backing plates too, PM me if anyone has a pair...

I bought my adapter from wolfgang. Cost $42 shipped. I dont think the one you posted will work?

Had to do a little grinding on it so that it would clear the nose cone, it is not just a bolt on and go.

It is solid mount.

does that mount come with earplugs? you will know exactly what I am talking about after you solid mount your tranny.

just don't hack out the stock mount, I am having trouble keeping up with demand for repair sections from junk buses.

I have all solid mounts in my '63 Beetle, not too bad, I imagine a Bus is worse...

Hacking this '57 is not an option, hence why I asked the question in the first place... Know of any other options Lind?

The SC should not be loud.

My Standard with a solid rear mount was purdy damn noisey till I got most of the interior panels installed.

rich I think you should totally just cut an entire IRS section out of a late model bus and run it with a 3 or 6 rib tranny...much easier Very Happy of course Im just kidding... but once you find out the real answer let me know...oh yea check with paul aka mynameismud he just did this to his 56 Kombi Im sure he could hook ya up with the goods...

I think paul has a 'mark rafferty built' tunnel type weld on mount.

I do not know how this affects the OG mounting of a split. If I can retain the option of both tranny down the road, I will definatly go this route.

Paul, Mark, anyone...?

Mark Rafferty's rubber mount - which I also did. You will have to cut the lower 1/2 of the old (doughnut-style) mount holder, so you can weld in a cross bar (which you will need to weld on 2 captive bolts on the backside- near torsion housing), these 2 bolts will be secured to the new rubber mount , which is bolted to your bus nose cone -hockey stick. Mock the nose cone , tranny strap up multiple times so the hockey stick will be centered and you won't have shifting issues (my fingers are still crossed). Its easier to use an extra empty tranny box to mock up - trust me...i didnt have one so I used my tranny...what a mother.. Twisted Evil

oh yeah- also REMEMBER to seal the paper gasket on the nose cone to tranny..(dont ask... Embarassed ) PRIOR to bolting everything up..

so would that ever affect mounting up the OG splitcase in the future?

Would you have to cut that back off? OR would it just go around it?

As far as I know you would have to reweld in the 1/2 of the ring that you cut off. (which could be a pain in the ass, since you may not be able to cut it off in 1 piece)

I've been checking old threads on this subject only because me and friend of mine are working on his 56' single cab and plan on the same thing. The way I see it, it's going to be one way or the other and not both without some welding. He chose to keep the original trans set up (for today anyway) and just go slower. Which leads to the next question....anyone good at split case tranny rebuilds?

i just took a look at this on my bus ,it is just my feeling/opinion that if you chose to go back to stock, you would need to cut the new plate mount out ,which shouldnt be too difficult, but i really think that with what is left of the original mount(only the lower half and about half the depth is trimmed off),should be enough "bite" onto the donut to stay in place when combined with how the donut secures to the nosecone and also locked into place with the mounting plate.

unfortunately i never was concerned about it enough to test fit the hacked mount by mounting the stock set up back in prior to welding my new plate in.

i should have used a longer mounting plate..mine is pretty close to the rubber mount- which makes me think...since everything is out i should redo it.

I'll be putting a tunnel trans with RGB's in my 56 DD in a week or so and will photograph the whole process.

Thanks guys, that was what I was looking for. However, I talked to the guy I'm doing the work for today and he wants to be able to switch the crashbox and 36hp back in at a later time. So I'm going to with the solid adapter mount for now rather than start cutting...

Is there any new moethods of installing a tunnel tranny in an early bus without having to cut it. I just want to put a tunnel tranny in while the split case box gets rebuilt

I too am putting a tunnel trans in my 57 standard. After looking at the available options I felt center mount (berg style) was the only way to go. Solid mount is ridiculously noisy, and I am not going to cut the stock mount period. Center mount is fairly easy to do and way stronger for those high torque/HP motors. No front mount needed at all and no irreversible mods. Nice and quite rubber mounts. The best all around.

If its only for a short period, just get the solid mount.
It is noisier, but it works, and is cheap.

I'm surprised nobody has made an adapter mount that incorporates some sort of rubber or polyurethane isolation.

I had a Bus Boys solid adapter in my '56 kombi back in the day - that mofo was loud inside! I quieted it down a bit by squeezing in a 1/4" piece of rubber between the trans and the mount.
