I'm about to buy a new front, passenger side fender, that we all have nick named the $%#@!!!! because they are getting harder to find and cost 475.00 new from the Thing Shop at least....
I'm spending $200.00 for the fender.
and $50.00 for a good copy of the Thing Shop factory manual. (500 plus pages, colored wiring diagram)
Let me know what you think of the fender, haven't paid for it yet. Is that too much?

From the pictures this fender looks pretty good. Make sure to invest in a can of POR-15 and treat those rusty areas around the bolt holes. But I see no bondo, no dents, no deformations, no perforation. The price seems fair to me - it's about what I'd be willing to pay.
Don't know about the manual - I have the ROMOTOC CD from K-mann Does the manual have info that the CD lacks?

As far as I can tell, there is no factory manual. Most people tend to use the Bentley auth svc manual for Beetle and Ghia 70 thru 79 for mechanical assistance. The CD does have scanned copies of the official VW parts microfiche in .pdf format - VERY useful for finding parts and figuring out how things go together using the exploded parts diagrams. If I am working on something, I just print out the page(s) of the area I am working on and dont care if they get wet, greasy, dog-eared, or lost. Pretty handy - and cheap! I think it is $12.50 - check here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=288313
Combine the CD info, the Bentley manual, the Idiot book, Bug Me Videos, STF, and the Samba together and you can fix and/or figure out just about anything on our special cars!

You know, I just looked at the Thing Shop's manual and the description DOES imply more info than I think it does http://www.thethingshop.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=181SM Anyone have both the CD and the Thing Shop manual care to compare and contrast?

I have the heater repair manual and the color wiring digram and the CD
but the Thing Shop manual
is supposed to be 500 + pages
here is a parts diagram manual, that is on the CD, seems about right 120 pages, PDF format on the CD

The Thing manual is mostly Type I manual with some 181-specific sections. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife
