Hello,
I am looking for some information/ideas on how to narrow the rear suspension on a 58 bug. I am in the process of doing a full body off resurection. Does anyone out there have any experience with this?
thanks

Ron Lumus Racing had an article in hot vw\s a few years back. They do it. A little chunk of work though. I think it looks bad-ass myself along with a narrowed front beam. I say if you can do it, go for it.

I have done some looking and can't find much info on narrowing the rear. I would really like to get some stock wheels widened outward giving the deep dish look.

Anyone know what issue the Ron Lummus article on narrowing the rear end was in?

The pile of work doesn't scare me, but I would rather not "re-invent the wheel" if I don't have to. Pun intended...

oooollllldddddd topic, but I am looking for some info as well? Any ideas?

I have seenn some centerline rims that were 15x10, is that too wide? obviously I need to narrow the axles and mod the arms, I have a '65, so it is the older suspension type.

Any ideas?

my son has done 2 of these. a 63 narrowed 2" per side and his latest 67 is 3" per side. i have pictures of them. the article in hot vw's says 2" -but that is a misprint. it should be 3" per side/ when we did the 63 we used the article for reference. only 2 sets of 2" shorter axles were made by sway away and they said was unusual. do the 3" and lots of axles are out there.

What size rims did he use on the back? And how did he go about modding the rear suspension, I assume new 3in axels abut what about the tubes and spring plates?

Last question, how can you find back issues of VW magazine?

8 or 8.5 by 15 centerline convo pro with mickey thompson street slicks 10.5 x 15. he was fast67bug on samba try search as i think there are pictures on here some place or i can email them to a email address. it has 1" between adj spring plates and 1.5 between stock fender lip. so yes the 10.5 x 15 tires fit inside stock 67 rear fenders.

That Convert is Mine. If you can cut and weld it is a little bit of work.

It looks to my eye that the lower shock mount was welded on too far towards the inner pivot of the TA. It looks like the shock will be at quite an angle instead of straight up and down. Have you test fitted a shock?

Yes it has been welded closer to the trailing arm pivot because there is 4.75 inches out of each side, 9.5 inches total. the bottom mount lines up with the upper shock. When you remove this much out of each side things ARE going to look closer!
I've got shocks in it with the body on, and the shocks don't have any problem moving.

I'm building a fiberglass buggy and I want to narrow the rear so my tires don't stick a mile out the sides. If I narrow it 3" each side what axles do I use. Somewhere I read that you have to us the axles out of a semi-auto bug... one side shorter than the other or something?? Can someone tell me what axles I should use. I have a 74' IRS pan.

The axles in an autostick Beetle are the same as those in a 4 speed. You are thinking about the axles in a full automatic Type 3. The left one is 26mm shorter than a Beetle axle. But that's no help to you. For a 3" chop, you need custom axles from SAW.

Is it fair to say that if I reduce the width of the torsion housing on one side by 3" that the axle would need to be 3" shorter as well or am I best to do the modification and use my old axles to figure out a length? Is there a chart someplace that relates axle length to torsion length?
