V-Dubin65: yeah my suggestion is if you want the look and such go 2, but honestly you'll be dragging ass, frame, and tailpipes everywhere you go.

yeah thats my dad's car, it's a 48 Chrysler Windsor custom he bought when he was 17 and it was sitting in his dads back yard until like 4 years ago.

I like it, that late 40's american style is hard to beat. I have a 49 Hudson. I haven't gotten it home yet, but it is safe where it sits for a while. It is the car my step-mom came home from the hospital in when she was born. I am looking to do it in rat rod style till I get the funds to do it up right. I plan on a chopped top and air bags with late model chevy running works and 50's style paint and graphics.

thatd be sick! thats what my dad's running, is a fatman II front suspension. drives like a cadillac! thats awesome that your step-mom was brought home in the hudson, i love history cars like that. my mom has a 1958 Chevy Biscayne that my great grandma bought off the showroom (under-construction.)

yeah like ones more ideal for driving...kindly. but honestly if youre gonna go through all the crap, knock it to two. you'll wear more tires, so id suggest just bombing like 165 Nankangs. when theyre roasted and flat its only 35 bucks a piece. tuh-duh!

Yea i'm running 135 , 165 now and i'm not having any issues.I get some road walk but I think most of this is due to the fact that the front beam has been cut to lower and it dosen't have much suspension left.

Why don't you just figure out where you want your car to sit by doing it the right way. Just figure out where you want it to sit, buy a $4 protractor, use this table, and set it exactly where you want it. You are not stuck with the 1 outer or 2 outer spline option, you have infinite adjustability available if you just do it the right way...

There's gobs of options between the two folks...
The most fail-safe way to do all of this is put the rear of the car evenly up on jack stands and leave the front tires on even ground, slip a spring plate off the stop and measure the angle. This is your starting point, write it down. If you screw up when you are trying to set the inner/outer notches, put the springplate back on, and monkey with spline variations until you are back to your starting angle you wrote down. I have always used a sharpie to mark a fat line on the springplate and outer torsion bar splines so I know where to put it back to if I goof. The protractor then tells you where the inners need to be to get back to the starting point.

Here's a good example to make this simple, we'll use one outer spline on the passenger side of the car.
inner/outer/degrees/cm/inches
0 /+1 / 8º10' / 5.50/ 2.165”
Unbolt the axle and swing it out of the way(you need to unhook the ebrake cable from the backing plate) . Unbolt the 4 bolts on the torsion bar cap, slip the spring plate off of the stop it rests on, now you are ready to start adjusting after you get your starting angle reading from the protractor. If you slid the springplate off of the torsion bar end and moved it one notch clockwise, you would lower that side of the car 2.165". You would need to be careful not to pull the bar out as you slid off the spring plate as it would change the inner spline setting as well.
If you went and did this to the drivers side, everything is the same except you would be moving the spring plate counter-clockwise.

The above procedure is the same if you go one notch, or fifteen variations of that. It's all the same process. Disregard the 8 degrees, ten feet stuff from this example- this only applies if you have the original old school spring plate tool that most of us can't afford. Here's some pics just for visual purposes for people to see what splines and parts and pieces look like... I reset the spring plates on my old bay window that was sagging a few years back.

Yes, what you do to one side, you do the same for the other. If you can visualize the spring plate on the passenger side of a bug, it needs to be spun clockwise to lower that side. Now think of the driver's side, it needs to be spun counter-clockwise to lower. If you took a tape measure and went from the ground up to the edge of your rear fender, you could get an idea of where you want your car to sit. Figure out where you want it and how many inches of drop you need to get it there. Look at the chart to see how many splines it takes, and just do it.
I set my car exactly where I wanted it, but both sides were not done the same way because my car had a lean to the drivers side. Each side was done differently in my case. As long as your car doesn't lean from side to side, the procedure for each side is the same.

Then the car needs to be set up on jack stands on all 4 corners, and zeroed out from side to side, front to back, parfectly level. The then you have to set the torsion bars back to stock specs for your year car. Set the car back on the ground, and then readjust from there.
If you wanted to do it an easier way, put the torsion bars back in so the spring plate hangs about 3/4" down from the stop. It then has to be pryed back up onto the stop. Set both sides as close as you can so they will be somewhat level when the car gets put back on the ground. Measure fender edges to see how high each rear fender is vs. how low they need to be. Use the chart and go from there. Big job for you, as you are having to do everything 2X...
Too bad someone didn't mark the angle before they got pulled out!

Yep, 4 inch adjustable beam with shock towers and cb drop spindles.
