My '74 Standard Beetle did not come with the owners' manual... when doing an oil change, how many quarts of new oil are needed?

It's 2.65 quarts. You should get a strainer gasket kit and check the oil strainer while you're at it.
By the way, there are a bunch of owner's manuals archived on TheSamba. While there isn't a 1974 included, there are many other years. Check 'em out:

Do not over tighten the 6 M6 nuts on the bottom of the engine. They just need to be snug. _________________ Glenn
