I have a pair of fire truck semophores.
Does anyone know: when they flap up and down - is there a delay before
they start to flap or is it as soon as they are switched on?
Cheers

I don't have an answer to your question but a good number of us over here in the States refer to those semaphores as "Clackers" since they make a clacking noise when they flap.

this bus had them when it was imported to the US. unfortunately the clackers were removed. as a result, the rest of us are now deprived of the knowledge of their operation.

As far as there operation, I think there is something in the mechanism that breaks the circuit once its fully extended, causing it to drop with its
own weight. Once it drops it flows juice to the solenoid again.

I have a set on my 50 Split and they fire right up as soon as you turn the switch. they shoot up fairly quick like a regular semi, but they go down under the power of gravity like someone above said. once they hit the bottom, they shoot right up again.

I've often wondered if my 59 Austrian firebus should have clackers or just std. semaphores.

I have 12 volt going thru mine. They go up very fast. ut they come down just as fast. They work by heating up the coils on the inside, it may take a while to heat yours to work.

Because the Bus was a victim of a Merzicization.

I remember - I was just trying to fire up Uzi. He is way to mellow these days.

...Hi Dave ! I know a '59 firetruck in the german Bulli Kartei club, that still has his OG semaphores, they are "clackers" as you call them! the bus was repainted years ago, in the original red, but the semaphores are still black, never painted... The owner told me at least 11 years ago the story on these "clackers", when I was looking for standard ribbed ones for my own bus at that timeso, I guess an Austrian firetruck should be the same as german '59 firetrucks, AND ambulances...

Thanks!

Out of curiosity, anyone know how an Austrian firebus siren should sound... should the pattern be high tone, low tone or reverse with the low tone horn sounding first?

...hi Dave, as far as I know, firetrucks had 2 Bosch siren-horns mounted on the front bumper, but I have no idea how they should sound... also, for the Austrian market, they might sound different too, compared to german ones...? anyone else knows more on thes sirens Question

...I`ve been thinking this afternoon about the clacker semaphores, in about 17 years, I saw 4 pair for sale, 3 of them where all orig. paint, and all of them where black, ribbed ones...

I introduced Mr. Merz to this new term at the Classic.

is the definition of "merzicization" trying to sell someone a bus that you don't own and then telling them how much stuff is not correct when you know that the previous year you went ballistic when someone pointed out wrong logos on your windows of a bus you were all proud of?

or is it annoying so many people that a plan evolves for someone to take a dump in your NOS westy toilet?
