So yah... i was on dunebuggy.com and they said it was an older type of buggy, and they directed me to here. I was wondering what kind of sandrail this is, what kind of clamp this is, and where i could get a clap that would work on this beast. lol thanks
After the paint job...
The clamp....

Looks like an old Hi-Jumper frame and clamp. San Fernando Buggy Center was the manufacturer. Originally the name was cast into the clamp, yours was probably ground off by a previous owner?? SFBC was sold, relocated (Canyon Country,CA) and renamed Prowlers around the early 90's? NOBODY will have those clamps . Hope you didn't powderpaint that frame, because here is the solution. Go over to the VW shop in Redding (on Parkview) and get some standard buggy beam clamps ($2.50 @ at most shops). If that shop doesn't stock them, they can order them from BugPack. Cut off the old clamps and weld on the new ones. Problem solved! |

Thanks dude... i will check up on those clamps hopefully this weekend. Im not sure what powderpaint is, we used regular paint (rustoleum) with paint thinner with a spraygun thats all i know. Why weld the clamps? why not just bolt them, wont they work just as good? |

if you cant find one, Im sure if you brought the old one into a machine shop they could make one for you.
Its just a chunk of aluminum (maybe?) and a little mill work.
just food for thought,

You know somebody has one of those clamps sitting in / under there pile of junk...good parts they have been saving forever. You just have to find them or they find you. |

You need 8 clamps total. When you see the regular beam clamps you will see you must weld 4 of them on your frame (after cutting off your old clamps). I mentioned powderpaint because if you did it, you would have to ruin it to modify your front end. Since you painted it, your okay and can easily retouch after welding on the new clamps. I would suggest a couple of diagonal braces on the floor just behind your beam. I always see them on rail frames, maybe yours were removed by the previous owner...... Can someone please post a pic of a factory frame to show what I am talking about? I don't have a computor and can't post pics . |

Here is a pic of the clamps he is talking about.
One set would need to be welded in place of those stock ones and the other bolted to them to clamp down the beam. _________________ '69 Baja Bug

Rick, thanks for posting the pics. Also if you look close it also shows the diagonal braces I suggest adding to the floor. |

You can make a matching clamp out of a piece of channel iron. I had to do that for my old buggy. I had a similar set up.
Get a piece of channel that is 1" wide with 1-1/2" legs and cut semi circles out on the sides and drill matching holes and bolt it up. No sweat. You can weld up caps on the ends to clean it up. _________________ Tehachapi, CA

Yea, he is the self proclaimed "Wheelie King"
And about the channel, that sounds like a good idea, and you already have 1 clamp you can use as a template right? _________________ '69 Baja Bug

Got a 15.5 gal keg for the gas tank. That thing is FRIKEN heavy full. Im a big dude and i was straining. Im thinking it might be alot of weight on the rear but the front end and 2 dudes kinda even it out a tad. lol or... we will just be doing wheelies down hills not pressing the gas |
