|

Hi all!
Going to look at a hard top. I am worried as I need to get it
in my truck with a cap. Gmc sierra 1500. Can someone measure
there overall height, length and width? I do not wish to remove
my cap if I can help it. (very heavy)
Thanks for any info, Kevin |

My hardtop (which I believe is a VW original) had the following dimensions:
83" Long (almost 7 feet)
60.5" at its widest (just over 5 feet)
21" High (a little less than 2 feet)
Hope this helps.
(Yes, I had to use a calculator for the computations) |

Thanks alot! I am going this weekend. The 60.5 sounds like the problematic dimension. I am going to measure the truck now!
Send me a pic of your thing and I will mail you a decal of it for your tool box!
pm me for e-mail
Thanks, Kevin |

Hi Kevin
I sold my hard top a few months back, she had to go home and get her brothers open bed as we could not get it in her truck with her shell.
Any chance on just driving the Thing to pick it up?? |

Thanks for the info. My thing is not a driver yet and the top is
2-3 hours away. I think I am going to "borrow" my father in laws
enclosed motorcycle trailer. It is 68" wide. That way I can leave
my cap on the truck and not have to rope things down.
I appreciate the info, I almost took it for granted that the thing is small!
Not really the case.
Can two guys carry a hard top with ease? |

Yes, but it is a little awkward. Most of the weight is in the back. I think the balance point is about 2/3 of the way back from the front.

I just picked one up in New York last weekend..... I have a ford f350 with a extended cab and I wanted to put the top upside down between the wheel wells..... No luck.. I turned it right side up with the front of the top toward the front of the car, tucked the front just under my truck box and the rear extended onto the lowered tailgate. The rear window was missing so I tie down strapped from each side of the rear window to the front of the bed and then tie downed the rear window to the rear of the bed. It never moved for over 6 hours of highway driving through that snow we had last week.. Good luck and congrats on finding a top..... |

my hard top is off right now sitting in the driveway. i will take pictures if you want amd measure. I am installing a roll cage that fits under the hardtop. i got mine from santa cruz and brought it back 30 miles in my 63 vw singlecab, the singlecab has a bed 5 feet by 9 feet, bigger than a full size pickup. the standard vw hard top is very heavy and takes four people to put in place! _________________ 63 singlecab

I am working on installing a roll cage too. If you wouldn't mind. I would love to see your plan or measurements... I would like to make one that will fit under the factory hardtop and the soft convertible top. thanks.. I have a few extra parts that came with my thing that I would trade for your info and if possible a pic of your roll cage......Thanks |

Great pics!
Maybe an actual listing of the dimensions you came up with would add to the body of knowledge and clarify things a bit more.
Some of the dimensions in the pics are almost illegible ......or at least can't be seen at the exact point of measurement. |

Just a quick update regarding my hauling issues. I ended up using
an enclosed motorcycle trailer for the hard top. Later I decided to checkif it would go in my truck. I slipped the front of the top into the bed supported
by two tires in the front. the back window portion sat on the tailgate
and the glass door nearly closed and was tied down. I could not believe
how well it fit. I have a GMC 1500 with factory cap.
Now to restore the top!

Hook the Thing up with a towbar and tow it along with you then install the top and tow it home.

Sorry this is such an old thread, but I wonder if a hardtop will fit in the back of my Expedition? Maybe at an angle? If not I will need a trailer rental |

I brought home a Thing top in my Expedition. You will need to fold the seats and put it in at an angle. I don't know if this is pertinent, but my Expedition was not set up for rear a/c or third row seats, so the cargo area was very slightly wider in the spot where the rear a/c controls are in cars set up for third row seating. |

Thanks Craig. I measure and it seemed tight- I do have the 3rd seat and rear air. I rented a UHAUL for 19.00 a day the 5x8 enclosed.
Made the 13+ hour round trip yesterday and brought the top home.
Now I need to repaint it and get the mounting bolts. ..?
Not 100% positive if it will fit over the roll bar, I have but read a lot of encouraging posts about that. If I have to get the legs of the roll bar shortened, I guess I will do it.
The top also needs the back window reset, the guy had a hard time getting it in so he taped it in temporarily. He never used the top though. |
