I'd like to replace the 009 distributor that is on my 1600 DP engine. I have a H30/31 carb and was wondering which would be the best choice for it: a 019 or a SVDA from AirCooled.net? A 30 year old distributor for half the price of the SVDA.

Another option would be to install a large vacuum canister on a 070 distributor that I have, but I have no idea were to get it...

I'd go with the 019 and rebuild it.

Vince Sadowski (the original Mr. Things Unlimited) has a Thing dual vacuum advance distributor for sale in Classifieds.
Pretty reasonable, imo.

The problem is he has a H30/31 carb and it will not work correctly with that distributor.

I'd get the SVDA *and* a rebuilt 34PICT-3 from Richard Carey. Cool

Here's another question for you Distributor gurus out there:

Since my carb doesn't have enough vacuum to pull the 070 canister, could I run the 070 without the can and use it as a mechanical advance only? Anyone know at what RPM the advance engages with the 070 distributor? I'm thinking it might perform better than the 009...

You sure could -- centrifugal advance is 6-12 degrees at 1500 RPM, 22-25 at 3800: http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm#A7273M

I disassembled, cleaned, repainted, and reassembled my "new" 019 distributor this weekend. I have to say that the difference between the 019 and the 009 is remarkable! Acceleration is smooth with no "flat "spot. And the two-piece points are very easy to gap, compared to the one-piece type. I'm surprised that VW would consider the 009 a replacement for the 019...

They didn't, the aftermarket companies did.

Congrats on the new driveability. Smile

How about a SVDA with a 30 PICT 3?
