My Thing is rolling after sitting for nigh on 6 months in storage. Got cold, too much work, you know - life.
So, this weekend a good old mate with loads of VW know how came over. The air was warm, I had a good 12 pack in the fridge, the grill ready too.
10 minutes after he arrived he deduced my growing assumption... fuel rod too long.
We share a beer, have a great grill meal and we hug and part way.
Today I trotted away from work for 10 minutes and bought a shorter fuel pump rod. Tonight after the gym, I spent 10 minutes putting the rod in place.
She popped to life with minimal effort. A 15 mile drive through UNC-A, a hoon on the interstate, then the tree lined Beaverdam area.
Yup, she's sound. I'll be driving her to work very nice day now. Yeeha! |

Great to hear you guys are getting 'em out of the garage.
I was out this weekend driving my Thing in the rain for the first time! |

Grrrr, I've driven my Thing almost every day for the last year or so -- until this weekend when I was in the middle of a project and realized that I was missing some parts.
Mid 80s and sunny all week and my Thing is sitting there without an engine.
Not that I'm bitter or anything. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

Supposed to rain the next few days, but it should be clear in the evenings. I'll take the 'er out and sort her.
I need to look into the brakes, air in the tires, lube up everything nice. It's the same "pre-flight" stuff I do with all my BMW Motorcycles (air cooled of course).
My next goal is to score a hard top... I'll leave it suspended from the rafters for summer, then button 'er up good for the winter for occasional drives.
It sure is great having my Thing on the road again! |

Congratulations!!!
I know how you feel, mine was on storage for about 10 months. I started rebuilding the engine but business travel and odd working hours didn't let me finish the job; until one day I got tired and hired someone to build me an engine. I still have to set up the engine properly (burning rich) but I'm very happy to be able to drive my Thing anywhere again.
Regards |
