IMO, it looks better to just get one with an AUX input on the back of the unit. Then you can hide the wire and leave your MP3 player out of site but still listen to it. Of course if you want to be really fancy you can get some units that have proprietary links for the iPod that allow you to control it from the head unit....
This is the one I picked up....

Maybe, maybe not regarding installation. I tried to "place them" before putting in the speakers. I got the blanks plate from The Thing Shop and put in my own speakers.
Alas, the "industrial" Velcro didn't work. The whole idea was to make it easy to removable so I could pull 'em out when need be.
Speakers on on the floor now, and at speed, they sound great. When I get it in the garage tonight and have some time, I'll find a better attachment point. |

I think an iPod Nano is the perfect music source in a Thing. No moving parts to bang around, can store thousands of songs. I've got a cheap little FM modulator for it now, and it sucks.
With a lot of the iPod in-car controls, the quality of the user interface is very important - you don't want to browse thousands of songs with a little "next" button!
Here's the Pioneer link:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069882_338834001,00.html
So, GA_RR, how is it? Looks pretty keen and has a scroll wheel - ideally, you'd be able to assign the preset keys to play lists too. I assume you can't really use the hands-free bluetooth feature in the Thing unless you're parked.
For $40 more, the Pioneer DEH-P6900UB will also play MP3's off of a USB jump drive (thumb drive?). Again, pretty cool if it works easily. |

Anyone mention mp3's or "data-discs" I crammed 8 hours of Marilyn Manson
onto one C.D. you can rip them straight to mp3's with windows media.
I think most blaupunkt heads can do this. |

My iPod Shuffle (first edition, size of stick of gum) hangs from it's cord. I simply reach up and hit "next" or volume up easily - without taking my eyes off the road.
Happily, I'll get to do that in just over an hour

Duh, I'm so stupid sometimes.
Looked at my speaker installation, and realized that when I lay them on their side...
They fit perfectly. Looks near factory. Doooh.
I may be a little slow at times, but sooner or later I get it |

Nice setup, and you've gotta love the Meters. I used to see them in this long-shut-down club in NYC. Always packed us in like sardines at that place, but what a great time.
My setup is way retro, but I'm doing some behind-the-scenes work to put in a hidden adapter and FM receiver.
I actually went and installed a factory-condition Sapphire XXI - AM/8-track in my Thing, and hooked it up to original speakers as well. The thing is, I bought two of those buggers, and have one of them apart on my workbench. The plan is to wire it to accept an alternate audio input source - possibly even through the cartridge flap itself, so you never even know it's there. As for the FM part - that's a whole different story.
My personal choice right now - given CNET & Wired announcements, etc. would be to broadcast my Pandora stations through a Sprint phone to my car's FM receiver. Will do that over XM or Sirius when I have the FM part figured out...and as soon as I switch to sprint. |

Here's a shot of my now "properly" set up speakers, with iPod hanging in it's normal position. I can change songs, up the volume, or hit the shuffle option on the fly without taking my eyes off the road.
It wasn't rocket science to set it up, the controls are dead simple (much like the Thing) and if something gets busted, stolen, or otherwise made inoperable, no biggie. |
