|

Bought a radio here in the classifieds. It has 3 "female" plug receivers, of which I will need to use 2 of them; one plug is where the power, ground, light dimmer, and front two speakers connect, the other plug is for rear mount speakers.
Anyone have, or know of someone that would have an old "parts only" Vanagon that can cut these two plugs out of the dash wire harness area? I would want a couple of inches of wire still attached to the male end plugs so that I can wire my existing wiring too.
And yes, I still have my stock harness and it's radio plug intact, but apparently the stock VW radio I bought is from a later year Vanagon, so I need these plugs.
Can anyone help? PMAIL me if you can help out with the parts, or have a contact. Thanks in advance. _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

Those connectors used to be cheap. But, the VW Stealer bends you over on the cost of the pins. They sell a one penny pin for a dollar! It will not cost too much to make your harness from new parts, though.
I used to save those plugs from any wreck I found. These days the majority of vehicles have long since lost those plugs. My van included. I recently got a stock radio too. So I too have to dig up those plugs.
Hope you got the code for your stock radio!
Keep having fun,

I got lucky....I remembered that this van had what I thought was an aftermarket plug wired into the existing radio harness using scotch locks. I crawled into the attic and found it. This dual plug fits this radio perfectly!!!
It says VW on it (flap of cassette door), it has a sticker on the back that states "Hiedleberg", so I assumed it to be a Vanagon Radio, but now I'm thinking it is a good replacement, and not a stock unit, as it does not look like the one shown in the dash picture of the owners manual (I have an 84 and 85 owners manual).
I guess a search on the internet for radio types used as stock for the Vanagons is in order. I used to have a table that was put together by a Beetle forum that listed all the radios that were used for all VW models. I lost that link (deleted it when I sold the Beetle). _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

Hmmm. The plot thickens. In the Vanagon owners manual, the picture of the radio has the left on/off/volumn knob, and a right side knob for what I assume is the tuner. The cassete tape deck is in the upper center of this radio. Again, I'm gathering this from a picture showing the dash. I do not have the leaflet for the radio (owners manual states a leaflet was included).
The Heidleberg radio I have has a visual "window" on the left side to indicate the radio station (LCD type readout), then a bunch of buttons for pre-set stations, scan, tuner right/left, etc. One on/off/balance/fade knob, and it's cassette deck in the upper center.
There is one stock radio wire harness is still intact, and has a brown wire, two blue/grey wires, and a red wire. I'm guessing this was for power (red), ground (brown), illumination (blue/grey). There must have been another plug for the speakers? Or perhaps one of the blank connectors in this plug had the speaker wires, and it was removed by a previous owner?
Anyone know these details as to the wiring plug(s) for an 84 Vanagon?
It's also a Wolfsburg addition if that mattered (perhaps they had a special radio option). _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia
