I am rebuilding a 1600 DP longblock that came with my parts stash and am puzzled by this inlet manifol bit. is it necessary?

its a smog control device. legally in most states they shouldnt be removed.
if you state does not have smog test for your vehicles age(in CA its 1975-earlier), no one will ever notice. many presmog vehicles are missing emmissions (smog)devices.

removing it will not effect the running of the car as long as you leave no vaccuum leaks.
be sure to block off any holes it leaves behind when removing it and your good to go.

BTW, that is an AM case, original to the "thing"

If your EGR system (the weird-looking intake thing) is complete, there's no good reason to remove it. All modern cars have EGR, and it helps emissions without robbing a noticeable amount of horsepower. The Thing Shop sells replacement filters if you're interested in maintaining it.

Your distributor looks correct, BTW. I'm a fan of the DVDA, personally. Wink

thank you all. I live in northern california, and my vehicles do not need smogging.

the picture of the mystery part is from the spare engine and tranny that came withmy 73 thing. Yes I will connect all the necessary hoses when I install it in my 73 beater.
