|
|
I installed a new gearshifter a couple days ago. One of them EMPI kind that has the ring you lift to get into reverse. everything seem to go fine..got all the gears still and with less "slop".
So I took it for a test drive and I noticed clicking type noise whenever I'm moving. The noise seems to speed up when I speed up. It's not a grinding or a clunking..almost like maybe a rock is in the tire kind of sound. It sounds like its coming from the tunnel toward the rear. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Robert
Ps..
Been a busy week...new windsheild installed..new horn..new shifter..new heater tubing..new steering coupling..new dampner and POR 15 my entire front end..Whew! |

The shifter shouldn't have made a new noise like that - the only thing in the tunnel that changes with speed is the gas through the gas line. You've done a lot of work on the front end - are you sure it's coming from the rear? It can be hard to tell sometimes. If it actually is coming from the front, I'd make a bet that it's the speedometer cable.
If it actually is in the rear... possibly a CV joint going bad that just happened to coincide with the shifter swap? I suppose it could be some kind of tranmission damage caused by a hockey stick being held firmly in position - but I didn't think that would happen. I've had that same shifter for years with no similar symptoms. |

I made a change to the shifter and got a noise about a month later.
Sounded like the trans, or something in the tunnel, but it turned out to be the speedometer cable. (coincedence)
I found this out when I put my hand on the cable (its by the steering shaft, under the 'dashboard' area) and could feel the grinding.
CV noises tend to make a 'clunk', but you can test this easily in a parking lot.
From a dead stop, turn the wheel all the way to the left or right.
Drop it into first and accellerate a bit harder than usual - all the time driving in a circle. (don't roll the car or anything).
Now stop and turn the wheel the other way. Do the same accelleration test.
If you have a bad CV, one direction will definitely make noise during this test. The wheel on the outside of the turn will usually be the culprit when you hear the noise. If you have CV problems, rebuild/replace them all. |

Thanks guys..I'll check the speedometer cable today. I rebuilt the front end after the gearshifter noise. I suppose I could put the old shifter back in and see if I hear the same thing. I had a new CV joint/bearings installed about 2 weeks ago so its good...
I'kk keep you posted.. |

Still can't figure it out...tried it with the old shifter back in...same noise. The noise only seems to be there when I'm in gear...if I put it in neutral while coasting, I don't hear it.
I'll try the CV test this week.

Dont think it's the CV joint...I know I need a new throwout bearing so maybe it has something to do with that and the clutch? I'll get a new one installed a see what happens... |

If the noise started after you started fooling with the shifter, My guess it is something to do with that. What are the chances of something else going bad at the same time. Are you sure it is adjusted correctly. You maybe not be getting solidly engaged. Shifter adjustment is a tricky thing you can be off a little and have a problem. |

I dunno..all I did was swap out the old with the new. I left it in neutral when I did the swap...everything seemed to go pretty easy. The noise didn't happen immediatly..I drove about 8 miles or so and while going up a hill, turning left, all of the sudden...CLICK<CLICK<CLICK...now it's there all the time. I'm having a new throwout bearing and cluth installed Thursday and hoping that that is it.
I'll keep the forum posted... |

That sounds a heck of a lot like a bad CV. You've perfectly described the symptoms of a bad CV. |
