This is mainly for all those who post the "how do i get more power from my 1600"topics.
This started as an AE case dual port 1600 that came in my 67 westy when I bought it. I wanted a little more go, and basically had a budget of about a thousand dollars to work with, didnt want to spend so much that I wished id just built a big engine in the first place.
The upgrades are-
Solex 35mm carbs from aircooled.net-(highly recommended )
with the bigger venturies and custom jetted.
ACN svda, custom curved to the carbs.
DRD L3 ported heads, custom cut to keep stock compression.
Bugpack header and quiet pack-
If you are adding the totals up,i did go a little over but wanted to do it right.
The installation of all this went VERY smoothly,If anyone is thinking about these carbs they are definetly worth trying. I did shim up the fuel pump a little, and had to clearande the fan shroud on the right side air snout for the throttle arm,but it went together great. After setting the static timing and just guessing on the throttle plates(1 turn after touching the stop) the engine started easily, and in ten minutes it was timed, synched, and adjusted perfectly. Timing is at 8 degrees at idle, as soon as you crack it off idle it goes right to 20,(both carbs hooked to vaccum) and maxes about 33.I'll fine tune that when it goes on the road. You definetly need to run a balance tube between the carbs-see mharney for pics-and I ran a breather hose to the right air cleaner(who needs a breather box on a 1600?)which i may tee and run to both.
Ill be happy to answer any questions about the setup.I plan to add some 1.4 rockers and the road test results will be in soon! I have routed every thing a lot cleaner and installed all the tin,so back off! j/k... |

I would like to see one of the vw mags do a 1600 upgrade shoot out.
(mabye they allready have)
Get a stock 1600 dyno it and them slowly add the usual basic add-ons and see what the dyno says.
I ould say the heads are where you spend you money wisest, i would ove to see a dyno comparison of all your mods with stock heads and withthe DRD ones.

I'm contemplating a similar project, but with Kadrons instead of Solexes. I already have them, and they've just been worked over by A. J. Sims. I also bought the new SVDA he sells, curved to match the carbs. I already have the same exhaust you are using....it's old, but should clean up nicely. I'm planning on a fresh short block with balanced, counter-weighted crank and new bearings and lifters.
My questions are about cams, rockers, and heads. Stock valves and ratio rockers, or mild cam and stock rockers? And as to heads....will fresh stock heads be good, or would I be better off with something else?
Cost effectiveness is a concern, but ultimately drivability is the deciding factor for me..... _________________ '64 Bahama Blue Beetle / steel sunroof

Well you want and answer, but then throw in cost effectiveness.
I would say a cam from the Cb cheater cam up to the engle 110 (depending on vehicle and driving style) and a good set of standard valave size ported heads.
Aj can sell you all you need and advise you. |

Congratulations, good job. Did you keep short-block as it was, and just upgrade the top end? What are your fist impressions of the change, if you don't mind me asking?
I've done the same. First, I've upgraded stock 1600 with L3s and 1.25 rockers, then IDFs, then built a fresh 1600 from scratch adding a cam, then up'ed it to 1641. It's going strong, I've had ICTs and IDFs on it (IDFs now), and I even have a Mallory distributor on it now Problem is, I want more power
It's a great cheap practice engine though, and pushes the car around very nicely. Can't wait to build my 2110 though.

I just built a 1600 as well, with a stock cam, counterweighted crank, lightened flywheel, port matched 043's, 40 idfs and a 010 dizzy. I used the euro 2 tip exhaust and it runs great!! more power than expected.
When building it I resisted the urge to do anything to it other than improve effiency. Now I have a great little stock engine with just a little umph. When I build my 2276 this will be the spare engine. The idea will to keep it complete with shroud, alt, clutch etc. for easy in and out swapping.
before the 010 swap-----by the way, with the move from 009 to 010 the engine feels alot more crsip and throttle responsive.

Hmm.....this might be cheating, but here's my 1641 with 40 Dells, and a 110 cam. Be nice 69Jim.

I probably should be running 28 venturis, but CB Perf. was out of them when I bought them. I installed 32's instead. It runs pretty well! Stock heads and valves. As it sits, it dyno'd @ 57+ rwhp. I figure it's in the 70+hp range at the crank. _________________ '67 Sunroof
