what would be the speed record for a vw aircooled vehical. Do we as vw owners have are own class as for salt flat speeds? I know it would be a challenge but I have a shop willing to fund and give me a belly tanker from a aircraft and Its about the size I would need to put a beam and seat and engine into it.
any input is much appricated. |

Thanks for the help and Info. I would run a stock motor for driving the car and testing it then which to a engine and tranny set up that would get me where i need to go. That 150mph might be a fun challange. |

Another article said he welded the front hood shut and added lead weight to keep it down. I guess in the front.
Hey I have a Type IV in my bug 2.0 from a 914 I know it will do 120 easy but it said he had special gearing to reach that speed.
The Type IVs normally have big power come in above 60mph. Which makes them great road cars. The only thing is you have to make your bug so it can handle the speeds. Mine has dropped front spindles, front and rear anti sway bars, 4 wheel discs, KYB gas ajust shocks, 195's on all 4 wheels. All that and I don't like going over 90mph. _________________ email: [email protected]

Official land speed records are by engine size and vehicle type, not by make. Any VW specific records would be un-official as far as I know. _________________ Scott

If any of you read the in How to Hot Rod VW's book about the VW's Aero abilities, it ain't good. They say that the original cars are raked with the front higher to compensate for the rear end that will come around easily above i believe like 80? I would imagine he had some aero mods? Our bugs are shaped like a wing for lift unfortunately. Audi TT had a spoiler retrofitted to them because they were leaving the Autobahn in the air at over 130 a few years ago. Our bugs are even rounder than them. I have friend that has some turbo drag bugs. At about 100 or 1/8 or more you can see them lifting as they go faster. I have seen photos the story is he welded the front hood shut, put lead either in front or on the passengers side for balance and the car had a big wing on the back. The wing made him automatically ineligible as a production bodied aircooled VW. He had to run G/FUEL Altered class. He was pushing 196hp at 7500 rpms They said " to run a VW BUG at that speed level takes a special mix of madness and driving brilliance. Roll ON".
This was in UK's Volksworld Mag. Aug. 1996 _________________ email: [email protected]

If you're actually going to do it, get an SCTA rule book and read it THOROUGHLY atleast 3 times. Build the car around the rules, DON'T build it then find a class to run in. _________________ Restorer of Porsche Speedster 80486 |
