I'm gonna check out the link later tonight, thanks! I think I've finally figured out how all the rear axle, cv's and all the other parts come together. I had no idea at the begining of this thread and now I think I've figured it out. It will be much easier to get the parts I need now. I think I'm gonna save up and buy the 930 cv's and race axles. I'll still need help when the time comes though.

Cool. Let me know if I can be of any help. The offer to bring your car over still stands if you need a place to work on it. LMK

Hey 62ragman, thanks for the kind words about the project car. I do believe you are right about the torsion bars. Before Donnie ever gets this car we will do 3x3's or wider with a bus trans. Donnie has a younger brother who keeps asking for his to be dual pivot with coil overs. He better find a great paper route. Very Happy
Thanks
Don

Not trying to hijack this post but I have some questions on fabricated trailing arms.

Here's the deal; I have a semi low dollar baja project in the works. It's based on a 70 vert with a rebuilt Type 1 trans and a sweep the floor 2276.
It'll be regularly, but not daily street driven with some excursions offroad here in Florida.

I have found for very cheap (but have not bought yet) 181 front spindles, rear stub axles, output flanges for the trans and a set of axles & CVs from a late model 4 speed bus.

What length/width would I build to gain the most ground clearance?

I found lots of good info at www.blindchickenracing.com but the 2X3 arms he shows building look like they are being used with a Type 2 trans ina baja.

Would Type2 cvs and type4 axles work from stock trans. to dogleg? Would I need spacers? The reason I ask is because I read that type4 axle is interchangable with type2 cvs other wise i'd have to mill the type1 axles down so the clip can fit. Type1 spline length is shorter.

If I had type1 to type2 cv stub axles with type2 cv's and type2 cv's at the stock tranny, which axle type would fit ?

I'm almost postive that axles/cv's from a Porsche 924/944 will fit the bill for you (stock tranny/stock arms). Plus the stub axles are the same as a Thing and the CV's are Type 4's (hold up to more angle than a type 2) then all you will need are some modified or stock 181 flanges at the tranny!

I've got all the stuff here to covert mine (just on the back burner for over a year now since I still haven't gotten around to ordering the tubular beef kit from Prowlers for my modified arms). I don't have a stock axle out to compare but just putting the porsche one up next to mine in the car (yea I'm that lazy!) it looks like it fits the bill. If anyone can prove me wrong on them fitting PLEASE DO!!! Because i'll have to rethink my setup, if I ever get off my A** and actually do it Smile

Yeah, the max angle for type 2 cv's is 17 degrees and I think I want more than that. Type 4 go up to 22 degrees hmmm..... I found some type 4 flanges but I dont know if they'll fit a stock beetle tranny. Will they fit? Do type 4 cvs have the same bolt pattern as type2? On the blindchickenracing site it shows that type 4 and 2 cv's have the same diameter (100mm) and it looks to me that the bolt patterns could be the same. mdetro says the type4 cv's & axles should fit the bill. Is this accurate. Can anyone second or third this? If this setup does fit then where can I find these parts?

Dan, I DO know this stuff: Type 4 CV's are what is used on 181 "thing" they are the same (splines, DIA, and bolt pattern) as type 2's. They just have a little more travel capabilities. Flanges off ANY bus tranny will not work on a type 1 nor will the flanges off a porsche 924/944 trans. The only stock VW flange I know will work is the Thing. For the stubs, Thing or the Porsche 924/944 fits the bill.
In theory the axles off a Thing should work too, its simaliar to a ghia chassis (I almost got dupped into buying a thing siting on one once!) and the tranny is a type 1 config, so lengths should be correct!

Look what I found... http://www.thethingshop.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=181501CVSET ....this will work right?

Dan, I did some research today, I found on the SAW site that stock axles are 16 1/4" I measured my 944 axles and they are exactly 16 1/4"!!!

Unless you have to buy new, I 'd hit the porsche classifeds and go this route http://www.rennlist.com/ads/ look for 924/944's 85.5' and older for the parts.

I got axles,cv's and stubs off a 944 for less than $100 and they are all in good working order even the boots (I bought 930 style boots/flanges from Empi for mine though, they cost more than all the other stuff put together!). You can probably get the parts even shaper if you hit some of the pick-in-pull type wrecking yards as 944/924's are dropping like flies nowadays!
The only thing you will then need are the flanges for the tranny, I got 181's from http://www.thingsunlimited.net back when Vince still owned it here in FL for like $30/pair but I think they went up in price now that there is new ownership and all stock went to NY. The aftermarkets might be more affordable now.

In the blindchickenracing site they show a picture of type 4 and type 1 axles next to each other.

http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_to/CVJoints_Axles/axles_1.jpg

Type 4 is a bit shorter then type 1 but type 4 cvs are thicker so deos that make the complete assemblies the same length? I emailed thingsunlimited and asked them about the complete axle assemblies. The used ones they dont check/clean or anything, they just uninstall them and ship them but they will check/clean em for an extra $30. Good Deal! I just want to be posotive that the complete thing assemblies fit before I buy them.

Here is a couple links to my class 11 car. It is a daily driver. I dont see a problem with notching spring plates. Total cost for thing flanges, modified type one stubaxles, bus cvs and shocks was under $400.

I like it. Cool What exactly did you do to get all that clearance? I'm guessing you cut & twisted the front beams and for the rear you preloaded the torsion & cut a notch in the spring plates?

Well, first I cut and turned the front end, then I used three inch raised spindles w/ disc brakes from SoCal imports. I paid about $350 for the kit about 3 years ago, I really like the disc brakes as well as the extra clearance I get from the raised spindles. The rear has notched spring plates, thing flanges, modified type 1 stub axles, bus cvs on bug axles, and kyb white shocks. Next time I have the car in the air I will take more pictures and show you how much I notched. Like I said earlier I have not had a problem in the last 3 years that my car has been set up like this.

yep, they still want $350 for the kit. Very tempting.... Twisted Evil So Cal Imports has some great inventory, I'm surprised I've never seen there site! If I could go back in time I would have left my beetle uncut and turned it into a class11, man! it use to be a nice looking car too. Coulda shoulda woulda but oh well, gotta finish it now.

On the front end I used the raised spindles from SoCal Imports, they are not thing spindles. Everything is Type 1, tierods, steering damper, etc... I did use "High angle" ball joints at first, but I kept breaking them. I now use stock german ball joints, havent had a problem since. By the way this is my daily driver, I drive this thing everywhere. Cruises on the freeway at about 75mph, I am running a stock bug trans, 1600 single port with full flow oil cooler w/fan.

I just won stub axles, trans. flanges, 3 brand new cv's, axles, new boots and everything except for the one cv, all off of a '73 thing. I paid $230 including shipping! Thats damn good considering new cvs for a thing cost $75 each. I estimate the parts would have cost me around $450 used!!!

These cv's will give me 22 degrees of max angle! I'm getting my parts together for the day I buy a stock bug and make it a class11. Very Happy
