I "understand" how to take the engine out of a Beetle from my reading but I never see anything about removing the THANG engine. Are there any differences? The thing isn't tall enought to just be pushed over the removed engine is it |

A bug is taller?
Drop the motor and raise the Thing/bug and pull out the motor. |

I followed the instructions in the John Muir book when I removed the engine from my '73 Thing for the first time last year, and it went just as the book said to. Easy as one, two-ouch!, three. _________________ DAVE

Some folks like to remove one of the rear wheels -- you don't have to jack the car up as high when sliding the engine out sideways. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Ther previous owner of mine hacked off the rear apron to pull the engine. That was one bitter repair job. Nothing quite as annoying as repairing stupid shit. |

Not sure if it was to pull the engine, but my PO did the same thing: the whole engine deck is gone. Working that issue right now by buying the deck from a parts car. Fire up the welders! _________________ DAVE

1961bluebug.
Since you are from the Czech Republic, and maybe aren't familiar with the many forms of English spoken in the United States, I guarantee you it's "Thang" in the Lone Star Republic of Texas.

When I pulled my engine last year I used those inexpensive car ramps under the back wheels and jack stands in the front to keep the vehicle level. To get the height right, I added a 2 x 12 board under the ramps. I also took the rear bumper off. The engine cleared with no problem. |

One of the problems with raising the car more, although it makes it much easier to maneuver under the vehicle, is it takes a jack with much higher lift capacity....and unfortunately that's not a tool everyone has taking up floor space in their garage or shop. |

I used my motorcycle jack to drop the engine. With its large surface area for the engine to sit on, it worked like a charm! _________________ DAVE

The BugMe video suggested jacking with a standard floor jack at the engine/tranny joint, dropping the engine, using jackstands at the side jackpoints, then jacking the car further at the front of the tranny horns from the side (chocking the front wheels all the while). Worked for me...
