I noticed a VW Thing Hat on ebay that I really liked. The problem is that it is not in the US and doesn't take paypal. I'm alittle uneasy on ordering it from offshore.

I'm wondering if it's possible to find artwork similiar to what they used and have a hat made locally.

The front of the hat has a stitched Thing and Volkswagen on it and the back has Thing 181 stitched. I was hoping to get a hat done in yellow with black trim.

What's the groups opinion?

It will be difficult to find such a hat sold in the US. Copyright laws forbid anyone other than VW (or their official marketing company) from producing anything with their logo or vehicles. Unless you can find a local embroidery shop that digitizes their own designs, you're out of luck. That's why so many hats, key chains, and other memorabilia are sold overseas or from Canada.

Personally, I settled for custom made hat: It's black with "Volkswagen" and "Type 181" stitched in gold letters. I like it, and I get a lot of questions from people asking what "Type 181" means...

Ya, I knew it would be difficult if not impossible. I've started looking for a vector, or line art, or .tif, or .epg file of the front of a Thing. I'll try taking it to a local shop here to make my own hat.

So, does anyone have a good front shot of a Thing in a vector file?

I've seen a few line drawings on the web, but they're all raster - you'll probably have to make one. Aren't there programs that try to convert raster to vector?

Capt. Spalding may have something like it - he's pretty handy with the 1's and 0's.

If you can point me to a decent raster drawing, or even a decent head-on photo, I'll see what I can do.

Try contacting Mark at Screen Dreamz, he is a Thing owner and also owns a screen print/embroidery business here in AZ.

[email protected] or 480-221-8385

Not sure if he will have anything, but he might.

Rain stopped but need to wait a couple hours for the sun to move around for a side shot. Here's a front shot. Would this work?

It would be fun to have the back of the Thing on the back of the hat.

I got the one off of eBay that was overseas and it took about 1 month from start to finish (sending a bank check and waiting for it to get there and then for the hat to get here ) every thing went good and the hat is good quality and I am happy with how every thing worked

I always figured a VW Thing hat should be a Pith Helmet
