What happened to my gas gauge?

Hi Guys,
This morning when I fired up my trusty Thing, I noticed that the needle for my gas gauge was gone! The gauge was working fine up till now so what could it be? Do I need a new gauge or is my problem at the sender? Is there any way to check them?

Check a few posts down, I recently posted about my fuel gauge not working. In my case the ground wire had snapped off. Make sure you have 2 wires going to the vibrator.

Very good advice on the above post.

When my gas gauge stopped working, I removed the sender from the top tank and found that the "sweeper" and the resister type coil were covered with a gas type residue. I cleaned it up with some carb cleaner spray (can), and all was well again.
