1. How can I tell what engine I have in my '71 Safari? I was told the engine I have is not original as it has a (capped off) heat vent on the cowl (?) and I'm told the '71 didn't have that.
2. I saw another '71 at the VW show Sunday in Guadalajara, and the front fenders were squared off (flat) on the outside but the ones I have are rounded. What are they (other than fenders)?

Regarding #1, it could be the original engine with the wrong shroud. The off-road crowd likes the Thing shroud and it may have been scavenged for a baja bug at some point.
You'll need to find the case marking to find out where the case came from. It's likely that the engine was rebuilt at some point, so it's really not possible to determine what kind of engine you have without tearing everything down.
I don't know about the fenders... |
