I tightened the distributor via the 10mm nut. It feels good and snug. I will try to post a picture of the endplay tonight.

After thinking about it buco is correct, your car is never going to run worth a sh!t if you crank is moving back and forth more than tiny bit, forget spec but I think it is .008 in max or something like that.

I don't see how it could effect just 3 and 4, spark but you might as well concede that you have to fix it. The drive gear for the distributor is on the crank that's why the rotor moves when it goes in and out.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Since I am learning as I go do I have to do a tear-down to solve the end play problem?

Usually the back of the case gets screwed up from the end play being off in the first place ant the back main bearing thrust surface getting trashed as well as the case. Therefore the case needs to me machined and an appropriate bearing to match the new thrust size purchased.

Could it be something else like no gaskets between flywheel and crank and no damage yet I suppose, how long have you had it? If it were mine I would just take the flywheel off and look.

The most you can adjust it is I think .03in or something like that with three .01in gaskets. I dought it the thrust surface of the rear bearing, (perpendicular to the crank), is probably trashed as well as the case.

Non vw same idea

I haven't been able to get to my Thing to take pictures of the end play but I did a little research on end play and a lot of people say that excessive end play is a result of a spun bearing. If that is the case has anyone had experience with spun bearings and does a spun bearing usually damage the case?

I know I'm going to have to open the engine up I just want to know what I'm looking at before I tear it down.
