I have a '71 convertible and would like to paint it from it's current white color. It's a convertible, so I'm looking for any pics of non-stock paint jobs, maybe different contrasting colors of body/top/wheels. Or maybe things like pin-striping or a two-tone scheme that would work with a convertible.
I kind of like what they did at Hot Rod magazine with this old falcon.
Before:
After:
Here is a Ghia with a different two-tone scheme. (Don't really care for it though)

My wife's car. It's girlie looking though but the scheme is nice.
If you want to copy it, just drop me a check in the mail for the design fee!

I've never seen any two-tine paint job on a Karmann-Ghia, apart from the two tone roof/body as seen from the factory in the earlier years of production, that added to the overall appearance, as in "Wow, now that looks really great!"
The lines of the car are elegant and rather complex - there are no obvious beltlines or character lines that cry out to be highlit with a contrasting colour.
It's really hard to improve upon this. Kinda like painting a tattoo on the Mona Lisa?
Arbitrarily making a straight line delineation on the car (i.e., the diagonal "cut" as pictured on that one example) really looks awful, I think. And the wavey flames on the other car, well, must be a personal touch.
I dunno. A KG is not a "mean" car and it would be very hard to make it truly mean looking. Scrappy, maybe, all ratted out in flat black (but that can be alternately trashy looking to some). Tough and "The Business," like the Bader Karmann-Ghia Porsche, perhaps. But in the end you wind up with a car that's a characture of itself, neither something it wants to be nor something it once was...
FWIW, I have to say I think that "kustom" Falcon looks like a clown car. _________________ David Ruby

Paint it bright red, tan interior, tan roof, put the wire grills over the headlights, drop it down low, but still high enough to drive, shave the side trim, replace the front hood latch with tan leather strap tie downs like old racing Porsches had, put a big motor in it, and be confident in your sexuality enough to drive a somewhat effeminate looking car that's still more bad ass that any riced out import on the road today. But that's just what I'd do.

jmorton thanks for the pic. Pink's not my color but I think it helps me see a way a convertible can look with two-tone. Maybe follow along the front fender down a little more to the bottom contour, I'm not sure how to break the back. Anyways, the way I'm seeing it in my mind, I'm not really liking it better than a solid color.
retrowagen I've also never seen a Karmann Ghia with a non-factory style two-tone paint style I've liked. That is the reason for my post, I'm doing a little research before I go ahead with my plan.

If I had a coupe, I'd probably make it two-toned Trout Blue. But I'm keeping my cabriolet

JamesT thanks for the pic convertible and red just makes me think it looks too much like a Porsche. That's not my thing. I do really like the coupes with the dark red body, black top though.
Thanks for your responses guys!
EDIT: Just looked up "Karmann Ghia Designer" and found this (yours?)website
http://www.geocities.com/james_t228/
This thing is great thanks James.
There is also something like it for beetles here:

Yeah, that was the old version of the Ghia Designer that I made in highschool. The more recent one can be found here. _________________ -James T

JamesT, is there any way to save the picture from your program other than screen capture? |

I would like to be able to save it also. Then may be able to load picture to a paint program and experiment with some stripes or flames. Thought about painting the built in part across door and quarter with silver on black car, but am afraid to try it. |

I love the Falcon and I would not hesitate to roll this car as a Daily Driver. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Wasn't there a 'special edition' of some kind, (a convertible) in yellow with black above the waistline? I remember seeing a photo of it on this site - didn't particularly like the look of it. _________________ Mike B. |

Yup, those are ultra rare. And the only "factory" attempt at a contrasting graphics shceme, apart from the early Coupes with two tone body/roof.
Ironically, when this special edition appeared in the early 70's, it was a "retro" theme. Competing special editions in a like vein were Minis and Land Rovers with "wicker-look" adhesive applied to the sides, rather like the "Noddy car" beach Fiats made by Vignale some 15 years prior to that. _________________ David Ruby
