Recently traded my old 91 honda accord for this 74 thing, its in pretty good shape, recently prepped and painted it and am pretty satisfied with how it looks, but apparently this was used as a dune "thingy"(?) before I got it, so there are some areas that need replacing/fixing.
The doors have some dents (drivers side is real bad), the fenders replaced with mini fenders, the hood cut to put in the hideous headlights. I initially wanted to keep everything the same but after seeing some of yours I want to start restoring it. My ideas are to get some new fenders, new hood, doors, use the stock gas tank (still there, just no hose), new tires, etc...
I have found many places that have doors/hoods for a good price, but the fenders seem to be very expensive and rare, anyone know somewhere I could find some used ones?
Heres some before and after pics

After (not finished)

THe THing Shop fenders are oversized/wide and need to be cut to width for stock sizes. There a is a shop that advertised in HotVW's that sells fiberglass fenders stock sized that are very reasonable. SOmething like Pacific VW or similar. Get the latest issue and look at the ads.

I get the impression that everyone wants you to get fenders for your Thing. |

Well, a in the case of a Baja bug, removing or severely chopping its fenders makes it look a little more butch. But the fenders of a Thing comprise so much of its personality - to remove them is a little like shearing Samson's locks. IMHO. |
