Rich those Speedos are crazy sh*t, I restored one a few years back, very primitive looking when you look inside at the assembly. _________________ CRG

Interesting, the two shown are very different. The second one, in the dash, has two screws the face like the later clear needle speedos. It looks like the whole center section is a transplant, I would guess it is homemade.
The first one apears to have the later odometer wheel spacing (like the flat top circle speedos), yet it has the earlier style graphic and the circle lines go right through the number wheel windows. I wonder if that one was made from a later (split) face, and one of those re-pro stickers applied, then the wondows cut out.
It does suggest that the trips were made from later mechs (separate window wheel spacing) and perhaps none were avaialble '51 and earlier when the full circle faces were being made.
Just some theories, anyone got any other pics, sources, data, lit??? _________________ John Henry

I caught my eye because I was just restoring an 80mph one for someone and found that it was actually a 1971 housing and mech, and they just cut the center out of an 80mph face and glued the two hole center from the 90mph face into it.
Makes me wonder how easy they would be to "make".
Although all of the split ones I have seen have the reset knob sticking out of the side... _________________ John Henry

I know three trip speedos with the reset knob on the left side. The two speedos Wiggy posted are the same, before and after restoration. My trip speedo is the onliest I ever seen with the reset knob down, coming out unter the dashboard. It is shown above on the posted picture in the black dashboard. I think the picture was taken in Bad Camberg this year. All the speedos are original and no reproductions. My one came with my original 1951 Karmann. The speedo was directly sold by VW with the car. The trip speedo was also printed in old VW acccessorie brochures. My trip speedo has also an imprinting around the numbers. The other three known trip speedos are flat. Here´s a pic from my one with the silver reset knob under the dashboard.

Original trip speedos are for me really the rarest of the rare. So...good luck Rich for your search, or send me a PM with a serious offer

Hi Claus,
I took this pic 2 years ago in Budel, when you still had both the '51 and the '52.
Great accessory, great car(s)! _________________ There's more to life than VW's..

Agreed.......................Let's get some good 'original' pictures of the "real" stuff and how it is supposed to look.......with the correct faces and shift points. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |
