Sorry but I haven't seen any reason to run out and buy one of these anymore than I did 30 years ago........... I wish they were real, but I still have major doubts. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Mark Bruno still lives in SoCal. I see him at shows from time to time, but don't know how to contact him. I'll ask around,........ but I saw that very speedo years ago and I was not impressed. It looked homemade even then. In fact, I realized then, that they must be all home made, if that one was some kind of "standard"...... _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Well it does now look like there is evidence of a few instance of this type of face. _________________ John Henry

Belive me it,s real there is even a part number and special sticker showing what it is. I'll take better pics later.
Also in the trip number box you can see the brown and white strips go into the sides of the cut out box, in other words the printing was done after it was stamped. that would be re hard to fake. |

Can you post the part number? I have a split speedo with one of those VDO stickers on it and it says "repariert durch VDO" which means "repaired through VDO". I wonder if that sticker could mean VDO added the trip meter at a later date. |

Interesting Jim, yours is now the 7th variation that I have seen both here and from photos other folks have emailed me. At this point I don't believe it will be possible to answer the question; "will the real split trip speedo please stand up".
Why that is, after giving this some rational/speculative thought, given the lack of consistency, plus the high degree of apparent craftsmanship in most cases, what I am beginning to believe is that all of these speedos were simply professional upgrades made to the original speedos from each car at the owner's request.
Applying what would of been the more practical thinking of the day, I find it hard to believe folks would buy an entirely brand new speedo with just a trip odometer added. The cost would be high for a whole new speedo with just one new feature, you'd be shelving/wasting a perfectly good speedo, and there would be added work to document and switch over the km/mile readout from the old to the new, etc. etc. Therefore I tend to believe that during the period it would of been far more practical to request the upgrade when this feature was advertised, via the VW dealer or through a VDO authorized service center by just bringing your speedo in for an upgrade.
With no repeatable pattern, no new part number markings (so far and very un-german like), plus seeing the VDO tech markings/sticker on Jim's version (confirming they worked on the speedo in some fashion), my tentative position until more data points are available is that most if not all of these trip speedos were professional upgrades authorized and/or guided/certified by VDO, thus making them all (essentially) "original" split trip speedos rather the traditional definition of a "one-off".
Also, I believe the 3 trip speedo versions I have seen with the 10ths (4th scroll) indicator were perhaps made to split speedo owners whom wished to have an upgrade made sometime after 53' (when the new speedo and more common trip speedos came into being). The more "modern" odometer mechanicals were likely seen as an improvement for use.
While these were advertised by VDO in their catalog, they may have instead positioned the trip odometer function as a service/procedure rather than an actual turnkey speedo (or shortly realized thereafter it made more sense to have the change made more practically at a service center). Perhaps speculative, but I believe this or some variation of this theme is the most logical explanation so far.

Let's just say it...................none of them are "original" trip speedometers. I have seen at least five split trips over 30 years..........and NONE of them were the same. Find me a period accessory catalogue from '52 or earlier that show them as an option and we can start over............................. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." I agree. Totally bogus. P.M. me if you have one, and I'll just keep it for posterity. _________________ CH3NO2.

It is also interesting to note that the trip meter speedo does not appear in VW spare parts catalogs until 1955/56.
Even then, it only lists trip speedos from chassis number 1-397 023. It does list regular split speedos in these manuals but no split trip speedos.
So I think it would be very safe to say that VW never offered split trip speedos.
Does anyone know of any other pre '52 cars with trip speedos? I am curious whether VDO made any trip speedos at all prior to 1953. _________________ DHC

A couple of years ago while I was dropping off my speedo and clock at North Hollywood Speedo, they showed me a split clock that they were making into a tachometer for someone using the clock face to indicate the RPM. It was supposedly accurate.
I only had enough mechanicals between the two clocks I had to make one good one, so I opted to let them make one of my clocks with a Porsche quartz movement. 12v for my 2nd car, which is a driver. Very cool. No winding, always accurate. _________________ CH3NO2.

Why from 52 or earlier to be a real split accessory?
If it was delivered by VDO in the mid 50s for pre 52 cars (and there were many on the road, to say there was a market!)
isn`t it a real split accessoire?
my theory:
VDO wanted to make extra $$$ and they delivered the oval trip speedo mechanic with split optic for pre 52 cars.

I'm hardly the expert here, but after reading this discussion, I tend to agree with the view that it might have been an official "upgrade" performed by VDO upon the customer's request.
It would be in the owner's interests to keep the original speedometer with the original odometer reading in his car, instead of getting a brand new speedometer with 0000 on it, thus jepordizing the service records and what ever else.
Now, if someone could find evidence that VDO actually affered this kind of upgrade for the split owners... |
