Yeeha!
Finally found a hard top, close, so I'm planning on picking it up this weekend.
Question: what bolts, how many, and what size, do I need to install the top?
I want to do the job right the first time.
Thanks Woreign, for the tip on the top! |

Wow nice score!
From what I know it clamps down to the windshield like a convertable top. The down bars then bolt in on the sides next to the seats in the factory holes. |

If you check out the pic of the inside you can see 6 brackets where it bolts to the inside of the body. Look around the inside of your Thing and you'll see the holes that they mount to. _________________ member of: Fort Worth Aircoolers Gang |

The hard top bolts to the body using the same oval headed bolts that attach the hinges to the body. 4 for the supports and about 7 or 8 for the rear of the body. The windshield attaches to the top using the same clamps a the soft top. You might want to get one of my hard top seal kits also. They trim the edges and seal the side curtains to the top. Very nice.. |

here's a pic of some of the clamps and the bars required to mount the hard top... those 3 clamps rotted right off my old top

If you need new rubber window seals, you should be able to buy it from a any auto glass repair shop. If you can't find any, let me know and I'll get the info and/or put you in contact with the shop I purchased it from.
I'm glad to hear you finally found a hardtop. Now you'll be able to drive your Thing year-round! |

Thanks for all the posts.
One of the latches is broken; I have spares from the grotty old frame I tossed. The down tubes are there too.
So, bolts. I assume metric. How long? What size?
I plan on driving my Thing to pick up the top, put it on, lock it down as best possible, then poodle home.
This is the start of my making my Thing a 4 Season driver. It won't go out if the roads are salted, but otherwise, onward! |

Nice score. I watched that one too but CA is a little far for me to drive from to pick it up. LOL _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

The top screws down with the same screws used to secure the door hinges and the hood.. |
