The first comment after the article is evidently by the builder of that Thing, a man named Wayne Alexander.

A Google search produced an article from 2004 about Wayne:

He points out that he is not a tree hugger, but they appear to like him anyway.

Based on his website below, it looks like the Thing conversion cost at least $11,000:

P.S. I am among those impressed by the Thing's 0-60 time of 5 seconds.
