I just bought a 1975 Westfalia and need to equip. it to carry kayaks and bikes. I'm planning on using yakima roof racks. I understand one has to install some brackets (essentially create raingutters) by putting holes in the fiberglass camper shell roof. Also, I am told one must use the 1A hi rise towers. Any commetns on this. Do I need the hi rise towers or will the normal (1A towers) work. Any other alternative methods to carry boats? Any experience with these racks? With respect to weight, I imagine that since there will be only eight bolts throught the fiberglass shell holding all the weight born on the rack, there may be lower wight limitations..

Howdy Guys. I am looking to bolt a roof rack onto my fiberglass top so that i can camp and surf at the same time. Anyone have luck in finding one? Or doing this before?

Check out Thule, they have a website. I think you need a 542 artificial gutter. The artificial gutter bolts on to your fiberglass lid and allows you to mount a "normal" rain gutter mounting rack to your roof. You can use a Thule 300 footpack, or cheap roof bars and they will attach. Thule also make a high foot, gutter mount foot that will attach to the rain gutter and reach up past the fiberglass roof, but you would need to take the roofrack of to open the top.

A friend of mine had a pair of yakima racks on his westy for surfing. I'm not sure how they attached but most Yakima retailers will set you up with what you need if you tell them your situation.... Expensive though, you might want to go with the Thule if they work.

Fiberglass is tough stuff, If you have some big washers under those artificial gutters there should be no problem. There is no reason you can't carry tons o bikes, or 2 canoes up top. I would guess that you could use the smaller foot with the fake gutter. Check out both companies (thule and Yakima) and go to a local store that sells the stuff. good luck
