I usually hang around at the Manx Buggy forum, but thought that I would come to the experts for this question. it may seem very elementary to all of you, but I am stupid when it comes to rims and tires...... here goes:
What is the correct offset to use when adding wider tires to a swing arm / link pin buggy? I know now that low profile (aspect ratio) tires on a larger rim size can be roughly the same diameter as the original 15 inch type 1 wheels...... That is the look that I hope to achieve, but therre are so many selections out there ???? My plan is for 10-12 inch wide tires all around. From what I have heard, 29 inches is the MAX that I want to go for overall height.
I have three options: 1) Wide 5 2) adapter to whatever ( 5 x 4.5, 5 x 4.75, etc) or 3) put discs all around that are drilled with the pattern needed.
Thank you for your input! _________________ Flaboyjim

Jack up one side of your manx and pull the front and rear tires off. Get a straight edge like a little 1 foot level, ruler, or whatever you got, and place it on the mounting surface of the drum (or adapter if using them). Now measure to the closest object toward the tranny that may obstruct the tire. Like shock, shock tower, spring plate, exhaust, and so on. This figure is the maximum backspacing you are allowed. Of course minus a little, you don't want your wheel rubbing against that object. Allow room also if you want to run wider tires than the rim.
It's pretty much the same for the frontend. You also need to keep in mind the fact that the wheels turn. So you also need to take measurements when the wheel is at full lock each way. Then use the avarge of your measurements to find your front wheel backspacing.
One other thing to remember is that these numbers may change when the car is on the ground at drive height. Maybe set the car down with a few 4x4's under the drum to achieve actual hub location.
Once you get these measurements you can determine the width you want and go from there _________________ 1959 Ragtop Beetle - sold
