|

I picked up this 412 in early November. I am still wondering if I want to get it running or keep it. I managed to aquire a Clymer manual but Clymer leaves much to be desired. Is a Bentley manual available and if so, can I expect to be robbed if I want to buy one? _________________ '73 Super Beetle w/ all the Sport Bug extras

No Bentley available for the T4 to the best of my knowledge. The Bentley for the 68-79 bus will cover the engine for you and the Bentley for the T3 will cover the automatic.
I have a Haynes that covers the just the T4 and several other manual that I picked up on eBay that do a good job as well. |

I was kind of afraid that that would be the answer. I would have thought that VW would produce something for this car. No, it wasn't a huge seller but still... _________________ '73 Super Beetle w/ all the Sport Bug extras

| Clymer made a T4 manual, too. The usual Clymer "quality" but it should have photos and specs that would be useful. |

Has anyone bought the bentley eBahn download? I am curious to know if it is worth it for a 1974 412. The clymer, haynes, and russek leave a lot to be desired....maybe I am spoiled by actually having a real repair manual for my vanagon. Since I don't have any of the other vehicles the pdf manual covers I want to make sure it is worth while for the 412. If it leaves out information like the others then I will pass. What would it take to get the VW shop manual? _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! A very good book that helps fill a few small but important gaps is the "without guesswork" booklet. It actually has a few measurements like for the transmission parts....that the other books are missing.
Long ago...like high school.....I think I had at least some goodly portion of the factory shop manual.
I have never seen another since. If the Ebahn download is affordable, I may buy it.
The vast majority of what I am bringing forward for the drive train alignment is actually contained in the combination of Clymer, Haynes and Chiltons manuals for type 4 (all except the shims for the bell housing hanger bar....those I had to find out for myself). But none of it is all in one manual, a few nuggets are in the Chiltons VW 1949-1971 manual which covers types 1through 4 and a few points are found not even where you would expect them to be within the manual. This is why you really need to read these manuals from front to back carefully. Ray |

I have this factory book, but it predates the 412. I mention it to say that there are type 4 dealership manuals out there, if you keep looking.

Are the dealer manuals the "Without Guesswork" ones that were produced? _________________ '73 Super Beetle w/ all the Sport Bug extras

No, that's a Workshop Manual.
Without Guesswork is just a small booklet of specifications. |

I have the old dealership Type 4 spare parts book plus a late Type 3 and Type 4 body repair/ paint manual, and D-jet Type 3 and 4 fuel systems manuals, if anyone* needs something scanned.

Yeah, I have that 1 on CD that I got from Russ Wolfe. It's dated 8-71. I also have a T-4 parts book (dated Jan 71) also on CD. I asked Russ for it, because I was after the T-4 engine info for my T-4 powered T-3 Square-vert. Both books are from VW, not Clymer, Haynes, Chilton, Autopress, or someone else. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I know where lots of Bentleys are available. They don't come cheap though.
buy a Bentley
Seriously folks, you can purchase a downloadable efile from Bentley Publishers for $110., but you're also buying the info for the Type 1, 2, & 3.
http://www.bentleypublishers.com/volkswagen/repair...ebahn.html
You would want to thoroughly read this page, which is also linked from the above page, explaining computer system compatability: https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/display/faqs/System+Requirements
There seems to be contradictory information, such as "Vista not supported" and "64 bit installations are not supported" yet the link at the bottom of the page that reads "Windows 7, Vista and XP Compatibility" seems to say otherwise. Caveat emptor. |

The point we are asking about though...is whether the information in a bentley that has the type 4 in it...is complete. Bentley never published a stand alone book for the type 4.
There is virtually nothing useful for the type 4 in type 1,2,3 literature. The money is not the issue. I just do not want to spend a chunk of money and get a sketchy "chilton-esque" rendition of type 4.....that is otherwise mostly types 1,2 and 3...which are worthless to me. Ray |

You lose
Had one for years, not a bad manual, but it is still nice to have other manuals lying about to cover what it doesn't. |
