The type-1 cooling system is designed to operate in an engine bay that is sealed underneath. The air must come through vents in the decklid and/or under the rear window.

The type-3 system draws air through vents high up on the rear fenders. The air passes through the bodywork and through a big rubber boot then into the fan shroud.

One big difference between the two or should I say the Three seeing this goes for a T-4 also.

If your fan belt fails on a T-3 or 4 you do not lose your cooling, you only lose your Gen or Alt.

Only on a T-1 do you lose cooling because the belt runs the blower and the alt or gen. also.

On the T-3 and 4 the blower is Crank driven.

What if your Type IV has been converted to an upright configuration?

The 1500S is the only I can think that would have a different cam, but not sure.

The basic Item's that need to come off the type 3 motor are:

Fan shroud
Mustache bar
bellows
type 3 tin
Dipstick tube (replaced by a type3-1 conversion dipstick tube)
oil cooler

I'm no expert but I'm guessing the spike during cold running has everything to do with the roofing tar(20-50) in the crankcase.
