Thanks Ron, I'm going to join that group, have to get the pics out to Bruce. I did send Winnie an e-mail a couple days ago asking if they knew anything about the car, haven't got a reply back yet...

Update on the 356 engine...I got it to fire tonight briefly, I hot wired the coil, sprayed some gas in the carbs, she fired and tried to run. The carbs will need some work, hoping to be able to rebuild them, but if not, I'll replace them. At least I know the engine will run, I'll be tearing it apart soon to give it a good looking over and rebuild as necessary. Exciting to hear it try to run, it has been 30 plus years since it last made smoke.

I can't believe that was here in Jacksonville and I missed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn!!!!!!!!
Well congrats to you.
Send a PM to "Uncle Bob" here at The Samba. He lives here in the Jacksonville area and he's been into buggies for years. Best of all his father-in-law has been into buggies and has some old scrap books of the JAX buggy scene from the 80's.
Another person to call would be Sherman Watkins in Jacksonville Beach, FL. He's been a long time HiPo VW engine builder/off road/sand drag racer/buggy fan. He may know this car or the former owner. Not sure of Sherm's phone number, but he is listed in the white pages.
Another possible source of info may be John Miggs (aka Heir Miggs to us young "VW punks"). I believe his address is in Orange Park, Florida (Jacksonville area). Heir Miggs was a local 4 cylinder Porsche guru for many years but is largely retired nowdays. He still shows up at local VW events and street rod shows, but doesn't build motors anymore.
One last slim chance may be Jack Overby at Overby's Inc. They deal in high end "pre-owned" sports and luxury cars. Jack used to be a 356 nut and club racer for years. Don't know anymore, but worth a phone call. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

Thanks John, good leads there. I found the Manx on the Manx Club site classifieds, I must have seen it just as it was posted on there, I replied as soon as I saw it and then called her and payed for it immediatly with a credit card. I suspect if I had been a few minutes later, it would have been gone. I wasn't looking to buy a car in Florida, (1000 miles from home), but it worked out, we had been planning a trip to Universal Studios with the kids over winter break, so the opportunity was there. I bought it from Marla Heuer of Heuer and Son Estate Sales in Jacksonville, Fl. They sold it to settle the estate of Thomas Bowden, who as I understand it, was the BIL of a Tom Turner, who works for Heuer. I've sent them both e-mails inquiring about the history, no response so far. I also heard back from Winnie Meyers, she has no knowledge of the car, she suggested I contact some of the local racing clubs in the area, I did, we'll see how that goes.

Looks like from this Obit I found that JR passed away and his father is still alive.
Bowden Jr., Otto Roy Thomas (Tommy) - BOWDEN Otto Roy Thomas (Tommy) Bowden, Jr. died unexpectedly Saturday, December 22, 2007. Tommy was born on February 3, 1950 in Gainesville, FL.
He is survived by his parents, Lou and Otto Bowden, a sister, Barbara, and brother-in-law Tom Turner, Jacksonville ..
Published in the Florida Times-Union from 12/29/2007 - 1/10/2008.
Can you tell I really get into searching the history of these cars especially when they are so period perfect like this one, and it has a story if you can find it. It would be awesome to track someone down and get pics of it in full autocross mode.
John
PS Leave the filler where it is with it that low you can't fit enough gas in it to hurt you. _________________ 1958 Boss Bug "Coke Buggy"

Coop, I have not followed this whole thread, so if this has been said I apologize.
Take pictures till your sick of it before starting on the buggy. If you plan to bring the buggy back to it's original state, photograph, photograph, photograph.
It is amazing how our minds start to play tricks on us during reassembly, and you can't remember certain things. Take every pic you can, even ones that seem ridiculous now may be a life saver in the end. _________________ Darren (aka Mr. B)

Darren....Good advice, I will take lots of pics, from every angle, and also as I tear it apart. Photography is another one of my vices, so I've got that covered too, (just ask my wife ).

Coop, repiled to your PM. I'll touch base with the Father In Law when I get back in town. He's got albums of the Jax Buggy scene going back to late 60's and 70's. I know I've seen a pic of that buggy before. _________________ OG JHC

Found out what it costs to rebuild a 356 engine after he tore it down? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Lot of complete cars available for that kind of dough, but if he has reciepts and finished the research and documentation, he might find someone willing to part with 7200 bucks for it. Definitely an unusual and perhaps unique car. |

It had an original 356 Porsche B. F. Meyers & Co. Sidewinder exhaust. Not a lot of those around. |
