I've noticed alot of people in this forum (including me) asking how to put 17" or 18" rims under a stock beetle and no one seems to answer. I'm guessing it's because this is a fairly common question with numerous correct answers that the regulars are tired of responding to.

For those of us that are new to at least some portions of this hobby I found this article that answered all my questions and I hope it can do the same for a few others:

I've had 17s and 18s on my '73 standard and used a 4" narrowed adjustable beam w/ dropped spindels. No body mods but, lost a good amount of turning radius. I also bought 5 x 100 drilled drums from CIP1 to avoid using spacers. I ran them sizes both for a year and got tired of doing semi size U-Turns so I'm going back to 15"ers.

Oh yeah, the back just bolted up with new drums and lowered 1 outer spline. ET on front and rear was 42.

I had my drums and front rotors redrilled at a cost of 45 dollars a wheel so a total of 180 bucks and I now have both the stock 4x130mm bolt pattern and the 4x100mm pattern that my 17" wheels use.

I just went around to local machine shops and would talk to them to see if they would be interested in doing the job and I found a guy with a cnc machine that wanted to see if he could do it. Now he is getting overwhelmed by local guys wanting a new bolt pattern.

I have slight rubbing issues and have about 2mm of clearence on my back fenders.

Thanks!

The wheels aren't for everyone hell I didn't like it at first but it grew on me. The added traction on the road is fun too the car handles alot better than the old stock wheels with 145's on the front.
