|
|
Hi guys, first post.
I'm about to start the restoration of the bus I bought with my father when I was in high school (19 years ago). With any luck, she'll look just like she did the day she rolled out of the factory. With the exception of Safari windows (Who makes the most authentic??).
I bought her and drove her a little then I got out of the VW scene, but always refused to sell her. I started to work on her a few years ago and paid a body man to pound out the few dents and stop what rust was there.
That's why there is the primer. She has always been in the dry deserts of Ca. and NV.
What do you guys think?
So, here are my first few questions; As stated above,
1. Who makes the nicest Safari window set?
2. Does anyone make the rear and middle seat frames?
3. The top belt paint was kind of a white-ish green with obviously green below the line. Is this Velvet Green L512 below the line and if so, what paint was on top? I have a hard time believing it's Pearl White, L87. It had a light green olive tint to it.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts. |

First off, good on you for hanging on to the bus after after all these years.
As far as safaris go, I would say Izz's windows are a good reproduction. I'm a little biased though since my safaris came from Izz.
You appear to have a solid bus on your hands, good luck on the restoration. |

| Nice bus, but I would have buffed it and rolled it as is. Shiny resprays are whack. |

The upper color is probably blue-white, which has a definite green tint to it.
I've interpreted the innumerable safari posts to boil down to Creative Engineering making the best ones.
WolfburgWest repops the middle seats, but I'm not sure about the rears.
It looks really clean. Is it a '65?

Good solid bus you have there and good luck with the resto...
As for the safari windows, as said above, Izzy's are the best repo's and it happens I have a set I bought for my '66 that I need to get rid of, let me know if you're interested...(high jack for personal gain...sorry...not really but oh well...) _________________ '71 Westy

Thanks a bunch. Blue-white, I'll have to look into that. I believe it to be a 66. I cant find the paperwork on it and I owned so many different type ones that the years are blending together. |

Thanks guys, no rat bus here. I'm shooting for a Blue Nelson (If that guy is still into VW's) type of bus here. |

| Nice bus! Blue Nelson, sheesh. Remember the "pass the Gray Poupon crash" he had? Are you going to put all his racks and lights on? Based on your windshield squirters and your rear hatch/engine lid I'd say you have a '65 but your license plate says real late '65 or '66, even. What engine numbers are on those cases in the rear? |

Wow, I haven't read a VW magazine in probably 12 years, but he always had the cleanest resto's out there with the coolest unobtanium parts. Especially when everybody was going billet this and billet that. I did not know he was involved in a crash. I hope everything worked out well for him.
65, very cool. Thanks guys. |

I just finished looking at your photo's. Very clean and impressive. I like your driving lights as well. I also liked the suggestion to look at Quality Engineering safari's. They look like a top notch product. |

Thanks for the props.
Since I don't have much "play money" I had to resort doing things "on the cheap". Those driving lights are actually Polish tractor lights. I got them on Eb@y for $0.99, put new H4 bulbs in them, and couldn't be happier.
BTW, the paint code for the blue-white is L289. |
