Good point, maybe I rewound it from the wrong end. Both ends are bent and one is in the drum in the middle and the other is in the plastic white case on the outside. I set it up with the belt fully retracted and the spring wound as tight as I could get it, and it would retract maybe 2 inches, but that's as far as it would go.

Why paint them with the side off, tape and newspaper works great. Take apart as little as possible on seat belts. I see new aftermarket belts in your future.
DOH!

I agree, you'll never get them back together.

I'm very happy. The belt works perfect.the correct position of the spring is contrary to normal way.i went rolling slowly on the contrary. The last laps were very difficult, becouse the spring has a lot of resistance.Tha spring is fuly rolled when the belt is out.Sorry for my english.Thanks.

Happened to me as well. I ended up getting non-retractable belts. Kind of a pain, but they hold me in the seat securely.

old thread BTW...

been there, done that... got my belts back together and working properly. I posted about it and my success in fixing them and suddenly I was getting messaged to fix peoples belts. If you don't have the patience to fix them yourself, then you should replace them.

I had the retractor blow out on me too. Three weeks after having laser vision correction surgery. Lucky for me I was wearing cheap sunglasses in my driveway... Blew them to pieces and clean off my face! No harm done to my eyes. Seems that there should have been a WARNING on the housing or made them unopenable...

I did the same thing, you just have to take your time. The hardest part is making sure to keep pressure on it at all times.

I did this exact thing, the back seat caught on it and ripped thew side off. I thought it was sparks from the battery.

Retro-Belt makes a retractable unit that looks just like the original VW belt. Make sure you ask for the Euro system or the buckle won't work.
