|
Anybody running a Judson and have problems with the air cleaner hitting the decklid?
I've just bought the car and it runs great. The PO adjusted the decklid to help clear the air cleaner but it obviously still rubs a little and now the latch takes a bit of work to close.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I hate poor decklid fitment. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

Hi - I bought the '57 from the brother of the gentleman you just bought your '56 from.... my car had the same judson setup as yours does... and yes, the air cleaner rubbed on the decklid.
I never really found a solution, and ended up selling the Judson for other reasons. _________________ Fins up~~^~~ |

Hello-
Has the rear of your car ever been hit? If so, the body shop may not have pulled it out enough.

Good thought but I'm 100% positive that the car has never been hit. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

36hp double pulley. You can see the shiny spot on the elbow of the air cleaner

Hello-
I've read about this problem over on the Judson Register. It seems, other than lifting up your decklid, there isn't a tried and true remedy. I have no idea if this will work, but if you're really committed to your Judson, you might try pulling the engine and fiddle with the transmission mounts. It would be a lot of work, but if you could move the transmission forward .25 inch or so, you might clear enough space to make it fit
Good luck,

sounds kinda bad but it might work... flatten the spot where its hitting the decklid. just the elbow...shouldnt restrict air flow at all... _________________ 1966 Sedan (Dad owned in Germany '74-'75)

| i was going to suggest that you use a manifold for a kombi with a governer but i think it would be too short. so you could cut 1/4-1/2" out of the manifold riser. |

Does your car have an OG split case trans or a later tunnel trans? If it's a tunnel trans, the motor is sitting more towards the rear of the car. Could be the problem.... _________________ Even my nuts are plated.....

I've just bought the car and it runs great. The PO adjusted the decklid to help clear the air cleaner but it obviously still rubs a little and now the latch takes a bit of work to close.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I hate poor decklid fitment. |
You could always do this

As you'd expect this fit issue existed from the start and is mentioned in the fitting instructions.
The Judson instructions recommended slackening the transmission mounts, tilting the engine back, (pushing the fanshroud towards the firewall ) to give more clearance and retightening the mounts.
This doesn't always provide the required clearance but worth a try. _________________ John.

Why can't you just grind a little bit off the top of the carb? Then install the air cleaner back on. It should be a little lower than before, maybe just enough to clear the decklid ? _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

I'm sure that anybody that own's a Judson is smart enough to take off the carb BEFORE he grinds it's top so he won't have to worry about the shavings. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"
