My friend has found this Kohlruss last week.
What he knows about it so far is that it is based on a KDF Kübelwagen and was built by the Austrian company Kohlruss.

Does anyone know more about it?

Fascinating, but ugly to my eyes. Then again, Beetles aren't exactly beautiful either.

I noticed reverse was in a different spot then a beetle. Can someone enlighten the uninformed? I figured it would be in the usual spot.

looks like this type of Steyr with a reworked front end (perhaps from a collision? perhaps a different year/model of Steyr?)

It's not a VW body, and the instruments indicate the shift pattern of whatever car it started out as.

True, but coachbuilts tend to leave the chassis stock. Maybe the reverse plate (if KDFs even used those, I have no idea) is orientated incorrectly?

My friend found out that it is a combination of KDF Kübelwagen and Steyr car.
After WW2 no one wanted to drive a car like the Kübelwagen, but people knew that it has a good drivetrain and suspension.
The Steyr car had a bad suspension and also often engine/gearbox problems.
That´s why Kohlruss used the KDF Chassis and the Steyr body. They had to convert the body, because they originally had a front engine.
They have also added a sunroof.

Was this then a "one off" (only one made)? Or is there any evidence that more than one were made?

I think it looks kind of cool. Restored black with red interior would look sharp.

No, it wasn´t a one off.

It´s not the only one he has, he has 3 more of them!
And he also showed me a picture of one more he has seen about ten years ago.

He also found a old business card from the Kohlruss company in it.
He will give it and the title to me tomorrow and I will scan and post it here.

The main reason that Kubel chassis were commonly used by coach builders is because after the War kubels were army surplus, parts were around to keep them running and NO ONE was making cars yet. Coach builders had the opportunity to fill some of the huge demand for cars that were werent built for some time due to war. All kinds of neat/strange cars got made at that time using anything available. Many talented people got to make a living doing this too. Jobs were scarse.

Hi,
I've found a Steyr 50 or 55 car with a VW beetle engine installed at an auction in Holland in 1994. I did not check the chassis but I assume it was a Steyr chassis, as the engine was placed in the front. I did take some pictures. I started collecting information about this hybrid and touched upon Kohlruss in Wien. I put the few things I learned through my research in an article which will be published in "De Luchtboxer", the monthly magazine of vintage beetles in The Netherlands, December 2008. If people are interested, it will be my pleasure to translate it into English.

I'd be happy to receive any information and photographs about hybrid beetles, like the Kohlruss assembled beetle-Steyr Baby hybrid, as I intend to compile a file and publish it, as information currently is scarce and scattered.
